Re: Bunkering Operation at ARA ( Amsterdam-Ryotterdam- Antwerp)
C/E since 1990 and only once.., ONCE , have I seen a fuel slip which erred on the side of the vessel. Maybe a dozen times (mostly North American ports) the slip was more-or-less in agreement with our own figures. DnV has/had an excellent presentation on scams perpetrated by shore facilities but at t...

Re: FIRST ENGINEER – FIRST OR SECOND CLASS MOTOR CERTIFICATE
That used to be the case, JJ - unless they're truly desperate. And for 1st or 2nd class in multiple locations, they may be - I sat on interview panels in '97 or '98 where they were making direct hires. Ironically, I worked more hours a month as a casual than I did as a regular employee - I know of a...

Re: ERR for BC Ferries in Tsawassen
That's interesting - Over the years, I've made out countless testimonials for ratings and junior engineers that were Company documents on Company letterhead. True enough, IIRC, most, maybe all of the Canadian engineers presented me with the TC form and asked me to fill it out but worldwide, I rememb...

Re: Gulf Ice Video
The Terry Fox was built by Beaudril in Vancouver. It now is in the CG fleet after being leased for 2 years in 92' the bought outright. Wow! A blast from the past in this thread  IIRC, Beaudril had 4 ships of their own up there - the two big boys were the Terry Fox and Kalvik; their smaller...

Re: New Training Requirements for Seafarers in Polar Areas
Icing in sea bays is already incorporated in PPS 2 Exams. PPS1 as well, to a certain extent - i.e: 'Configure generators for ice.' Even down South in Northumberland Strait, it could be an issue. With manual recirc of the O/B discharges back to the sea inlets, I distinctly remember getting confused ...

Re: Low Sulphur Diesel
FWIW, I have spent the last few years working for a 'green' seismic outfit - SCR exhaust treatment, trick glycerine-based stern tube lubricants, biodegradeable hydraulic oil for the deck machinery, etc., and low-sulphur diesel (one of their major marketing strategies was the vessels' low carbon foot...

New Kid in the PPS Neighbourhood
FYI, PPS Level 1 has recently become available at Holland College Marine Training Center in Summerside, PEI. They don't have a cadet program there so the simulator is more readily available for upgraders and the waiting list - if any - should be minimal.

Alfa Laval PU 100E
Yet another purifier question - I'm thinking that I can't see the forest for the trees but has anyone seen this before? No loose carbon in the bowl and the discs are clean. We opened her up due to an increase in um.., vibration  . Why on Earth would it only build up in one section like that? T...

Re: Main Bearing Check
I suppose that all depends, do you want to find the one in worst condition, or the one in the best condition? I do believe that may have been the reason the shoreside mechanic protested so vigorously against my suggestion that we look at the drive end bearing, preferring instead to remove one at th...

Main Bearing Check
If, during a partial overhaul, one was to drop a single main bearing on a 9 cylinder medium speed genset engine of 1800 Kw to check for condition, which position should it be?

Re: Found what you were looking for ?
Hi Martin - I've been wanting to get back to Canada for the last year or so (exchange rates have been killing me!) and answered an ad from Colleen at Atlantic Towing. Looks like I'll be assigned to a position on one of their UT-722s :D so this would be a good opportunity to thank you for all the eff...

Re: Chief Engineer wages
Somewhere between 100 to 120 thousand is the norm. More in the offshore. rgds Maybe on a new generation DP3 rig, drillship or large heavy lift/subsea construction/dive support/ROV vessel or maybe a brand new DP3 pipelayer but those are specialty vessels and you don't have a hope of getting one of t...

I keep telling myself that the exams can't be that difficult since everyone else has passed them. I wouldn't say that everyone else has passed them. I know more than one person who has tried two or three times before giving up. Some people just have a difficult time getting their heads around the m...

Re: Engineers losing control (skills)....
I guess any training is a Good Thing but if it is not used immediately and often, it will slowly seep away until you're more-or-less back where you started. I took a DP maintenance course at Lowestoft College four years ago but have had ETO's on all my ships since and despite having passed the cours...
