Re: First Class Thermodynamics

I think you're on the right track. Mass sphere = Volume X Density 106.9kg = Vol X 2.56 X 1000 Think of it this way, if you've got a sphere that only weighs 106.9 kg, but takes up 41 m3, you know somethings not right considering the relative density is greater than water. The relative density of wate...

Re: summertime lull

CRO for indicator diagrams: On ships in the seventies, great. That was forty years ago. The CRO was replaced with an analogue to digital convertor and computers quite some time ago. You'll notice I specified a bulk CO2 system. I've sailed on ships and am familiar with compressed CO2, high fog, foam,...

Re: summertime lull

I wouldn't necessarily call studying something that you haven't actually done dumb in order to pass an exam. I just finished studying for my 1st Class EKG and the question bank I was studying from included coal, a cathode ray oscilloscope for indicator diagrams, the distillation of do, hfo lo from c...

Re: P.Eng after 1st Class?

Well it definitely seems like an uphill battle which might not be worth fighting. $500+ to apply, and then the possibility of up to 9 exams (at $350 a pop) to meet their academic requirements.

P.Eng after 1st Class?

Has anyone applied to one of the provincial associations for professional engineers and found out what they accredit a 1st Class ticket at and what is required to get your P.Eng without actually having a 4 year undergraduate degree in engineering?

Re: Ship Inspection Requirement?

Not sure if its exactly what you're looking for, but have a look at #62 in MOHS which mentions weekly rounds of certain areas (related to food prep and storage as well as potable water) and logging these inspections.

Re: Marine Engineering Tutorials- New!

It looks like the Georgian classes are 3 weeks long while PMTC on the west coast is offering similar courses that are two or three times as long. I'm not sure what the differences are between the two colleges, but PMTC's 6-9 weeks is a lot of time to commit to for each of the exams. Has anyone found...

Re: Cruise Ship Fire

I worked on a couple passenger ships that were by the same yard as the Splendor. There were two separate HT and LT cooling circuits for the four engines, with cross connections which were normally kept closed. We did have a problem with a flexible coupling splitting on one side of the system resulti...

Re: Fridge Problem

Is there a crankcase pressure regulating valve fitted before the compressor? On our setup we have these installed with their main purpose being to prevent overloading of the compressor by limiting the crankcase pressure during defrost cycle or after a normal shutdown period. Our compressor was behav...

Re: Problems Alfa Laval LOPX 705

Maybe a faulty pressure relief valve protecting supply pump? Or maybe a faulty pressure regulating valve as mentioned by Big Pete. Its obvious, but has the supply strainer been checked?
