Re: Journeyman certificates
Hi Martin, Yeah I don't think we're talking about the same thing as the OP but I did the same apprenticeship programme at PMTI. I recall that they wanted to wrap up our class cohort early because they were going to change the programme, this was the early 80's or so. So our last two years were squee...

Re: Dive Boat Captain charged with 34 counts of manslaughter
If I was a USCG inspector who had anything to do with certifying this vessel I'd be sweating a bit also...

Re: ER noise level
Martin, I'm thinking that by average engine room level you don't mean the average of a bunch of different locations in an engine room but the expected noise level for a given engine installation? I only have figures from memory and engineers who are working should have real numbers because these are...

The MPR; 111 Before a certificate of competency or an endorsement is issued to an applicant, the applicant shall provide the examiner with (a) proof that the applicant is a qualified person; I don't see anything in the current MPR about citizenship. I'm not sure what "qualified person" mea...

Re: wages
Ok, lets look at this a bit. From CSA 2001; Certificates Marginal note:Positions on board Canadian vessels 87 Every person who is employed on board a Canadian vessel in a position in respect of which a certificate is required under this Part shall hold the certificate and comply with its terms and c...

Re: wages
"the Canadian requirement will be dropped" Do you mean the Canadian requirement to hold a Canadian cert or the requirement for Canadian certs on Canadian flagged vessels? I suppose essentially they're both the same anyways. Is this decided? I've read that this may be an outcome of CETA but...

Re: TC 3rd Class ofr NS based Superport
I've never heard of a "3rd Class Marine Engineer with C/E Endorsement" in Canada. Is this something to do with the STCW 2010 regime?

My what an intelligent response. I'm reluctant to encourage this but maybe Mr. Negativity could tell us WTH his comment has to do with this thread.

Re: A look at how the UK implemented STCW 2010
This does not at all sound like the TC SSB which was thankfully cancelled before it could do any more damage. SSB-05-2017 was a screw-up for sure, but imagine if it had been allowed to carry on for years to affect many more than it did. Who would seriously think they could get and keep a First Class...

Re: Chief Engineer, Atlantic Osprey
This was interesting, I understand Atlantic Towing is one of the better companies to work for. I think that like most of the East Coast companies they preferentially hire locals but does anyone know how they had to go looking for a C/E for one of their offshore vessels on such short notice? I would ...

Re: STERN TUBE HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING MANEUVERING
Oh yeah the prop out of the water is a good piece of the puzzle. For starters the reduced prop efficiency may be why they needed to increase the shaft RPM to begin with, and more than normally required. Good reason not to let those tugs go too early if you have them. Also as mentioned above if the a...

Re: STERN TUBE HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING MANEUVERING
Hi adreno, This is a theoretical scenario right? Of course the biggest worry is shaft/bearing damage - but as BP mentioned first find out if it's excessive heat from the bearing or much more likely a cooling problem. If this is a real situation you're probably alongside now but I'd check all the oil...

Re: wages
I've thought about this post off and on for years now and I've finally gone back to find it. I'm puzzled that no one seems interested in this. Does no one care what the wages are for marine engineers or does everyone already know it all? Isn't it in our interest to share this info or do we just leav...

Re: Filling out the ER Log
Ok thx JJ, that makes sense to me. If you have 50% of the requirement of (b) (1.5 months in the last 12) you would need say 50% of (a) (6 months in the 4 yrs before that). Or some combination like that.
