Re: New Patrol Vessels

There are many more issues with these vessels which I am not at liberty to post on this open forum board. Suffice it to say things are not kosher with some of the touchy subjects being discovered on these piles of taxpayers money pits.

Re: New Patrol Vessels

There is more to it than simply growing pains I am afraid. The hull and superstructure consists of 3 different metal types, aluminum being one of them, all welded construction, the alum/steel using the explosive method. And guess what, there is no cathodic protection on board these vessels!!!! So gu...

Re: New Training Requirements for Seafarers in Polar Areas

Oh yes, the freezing pipe syndrome. Experienced it many many times too. We got stuck in Bathurst inlet one year and I cleaned out all the heat tape the one hardware store had in Cambridge bay, as well as pipe insulation. We ended up winterizing in a hell hole called Hope Bay, a gold mine that was ju...

Re: New Training Requirements for Seafarers in Polar Areas

This is all very interesting. I wonder who will be putting this infomercial together? After working on 170' arctic tugs for 30 years out of Hay Riviera, and experiencing all sorts of "Arctic Emergencies", I wonder what fodder they will come up with? After a few turns at replacing busted of...

Re: Hiring all ranks of Marine Engineers for Cruise Ferry in BC

As usual, the Government's, either federal or Provincial, have the ability to circumvent the rules that they apply to us as seafarers whenever they feel the need. This is still a vessel, it floats and has a propulsion system. If it was a simple barge, this would be different, only in a small part. I...

Re: Why Do Governments always go down this Corporate Route?

I don't think the East/West comparison is valid. The Ferries on the East Coast are actually much more like Ships ready for deep sea service, while the Ferries on the West Coast are generally smaller with open decks on the majority of the runs. The Washington State Ferries are very similar in design ...
