Re: Is Pipe tunnel an enclosed space?
pipe tunnel aka duct keel, is definitely an enclosed space. Old cargo ship I worked on 35 years ago had one, had an entrance with a quick opening hatch at the focsle which led you down a vertical ladder to the belly of the ship. Exit was a bolted up hatch on the fwd ER bulkhead. Nest of piping for b...

Re: Stern tube
no experience working on a trawler. Does the stern tube have an arrangement to check void space between the sea water and oil seal. If you do...draw a sample and you will know if your seal has compromised. Check the vent is clear.

Re: Premature pipe failure
have seen this happen on 8 year old vessel. low sea bay suction pipe flange collar erosion all around where the main sea bay valve meet. At dry dock , did thickness measurements and almost 50% wasted away. Rebuilt and machining in suit as per class specification. Next dry dock whole drop pipe will b...

lube oil analysis will tell you if its iron....check the previous oil report.....does your vessel have one in place? any kind of metal in air compressor is a NO, problem should be rectified immediately.

Re: UK COC TO CANADIAN
you should go to a transport canada marine safety office and meet the examiner and ask all the question . In BC, each engineering exams are held on a particular date/day/time and not "any time of the year" . You can ask for a copy of the exam schedules.

Re: UK COC TO CANADIAN
To get a canadian equivalent class 2 coc you do have to pass EKG & EKM and finally orals. You should have no problem getting an exemption for your class 2 academic papers since you currently have a Uk class 2 . You mention that you have passed your class 1 EKG & EKM + nav.arc. How did you ma...

Re: Vibration issues
We have a 900RPM inline 9 engine driving a 4160V alternator [/b] . Is it a Bergans coupled to a Siemen's alternator 4160V?. Check out all the above suggestion. If you are located in BC coast and if its Siemens alternator, give JC Controls in Seattle ( Jeff Chia, P.E) a call, he is a expert on those...

Re: Korean Ferry Sinks
this master declared himself as being a passenger when asked by rescue crew. Telling the passengers to stay put in their cabins while the ship kept listing and eventually sank . This is gross incompetence.

Re: Korean Ferry Sinks
from this tragic incident it is apparent a timely evacuation could have saved a lot of life. Giving all the power in the hands of one person "master" should come with limitation?. IMO should bring changes and make provisions in this respect that if the crew feel that a ships master gross i...

Re: under voltage and over current trip
thanks for correcting my typo....senior moment....not quite there yet. It should have been dead "generator" condition. if you try to close the cb of a dead generator if there was no uv protection, then the dead generator would be equivalent to a short circuit on the busbar and cause a blac...

Re: under voltage and over current trip
undervoltage prevents closer of the circuit breaker under dead bus condition, its calibrated by voltage injection. Overcurrent trip is usually only done in drydock by current injection by firm who are specialized to work on circuit breakers
