Re: Good Shipbuilding Practice vs Requirement

After much posturing and crying in their Soju, they are agreeing to relocate the header tanks from the upper tween decks into the funnel at a suitable height to reach design pressure of LT system. The resistance effectively boiled down to them not knowing how they could fit new tanks through the fun...

Re: Good Shipbuilding Practice vs Requirement

I agree with everything you say. Unfortunately I wasn't involved in the project during the spec discussions or agreement, yet there it is on occasion, along with 'builders standard' which is another way for them to come up with magical reasons for doing it there way which suits the mistakes made. It...

Good Shipbuilding Practice vs Requirement

Quick question for the wealth of knowledge and experience on here. Is there any class (any society) or statutory rule stipulating that a fresh water cooling system is to be a higher pressure than the sea water system? We are in the final fitting out stage of a newbuild, and run up and testing of sys...

Re: STCW Refresher courses

So far the consensus is that schools are developing courses to put forward to TC for approval, with target dates of this fall. Then with approval, courses can be ready for 2016 entry. Schools are looking to develop 1 week (30.5hr) all in one courses, as well as individual refreshers.

STCW Refresher courses

Hello all, It's been a while, With the STCW requirement for refresher courses in Emergency duties (MED's) coming into force Jan 2017, are there any courses offered in Canada yet? I just got off the phone with BCIT in North Vancouver (PMTI to those older than the internet) and they say "We've ha...

Re: Vessel On-hire Survey Report

I found this via Google search: http://www.scribd.com/doc/60150741/Sample-of-Hire-Survey-Report Not AHTS specific though. I find that the CMID template/guide from IMCA is definitely in depth and a bit of a gold standard in the offshore industry. It is not an On hire survey document but it is done an...

Re: Nigerian cook survives 2 day in air bubble

The Diver may have a few bad dreams, but I guarantee that it will be his proudest moment. All the divers I've sailed with have been the utmost in professional and most of the South African ones have been ex forces, trained in this sort of thing. The day to day of inspecting flow lines or scraping ba...

Re: Building in China?

Thanks for the post. I am also in China, working out of Qidong, about an hour out of Shanghai. We have most items sent to Singers from Europe directly, usually two containers full. All local items bought are just to get the ship down to Singapore where all spares and tools are then stored up. As par...

Re: Engine Room Layout Drawings

Depending where you are in the world you could try a Marine School library.
I know that The Marine Institute in St. John's NFLD library has a full set of ships drawings, systems and all. I believe the Marine campus of BCIT in Vancouver also has drawings on file in the library.

Re: CCTV in the engine room

The key solution, I think, would be to ensure the camera is facing the switchboard and not the Engineers desk. If the camera is there for a safety tool then it should face the switchboard to monitor for fire or other risks. Any other focus point can be debated for purpose. Cameras and recording devi...

Re: Emma's engine under water

That report sure makes my day...not. I'm currently in China building ships, and the amount of times I've thought to myself "I'm signing this acceptance report?" worries me to no end. We are using DNV which are on site and short handed with one maybe two at times, inspectors for three ships...

Re: Sever residential ties and move?

As I posted in another thread recently; I've been working International since my cadetship over ten years ago. When I returned from my first trip, I went and saw a tax lawyer for advice. The main topic of discussion was obviously; "How do I keep the most amount of money?" The reason I went...
