Re: things you dont want to see in your gearbox

Main Gearbox, ie drive to prop.

No it was beyond repair, that was the pinon drive, the bull wheel also had a small crack, time to get a new bull wheel 5 weeks. No choice, two new gears.

Re: My Turn- Fault Finding

Upon mature reflection I have had problems with the internals of these bellows before. Good One.

Cold weather is normally good for air volume, I assume there is no Ice build up, blocking the vents.

Re: My Turn- Fault Finding

Are you refering to afterburning?

I have seen the nozzle dirty enough to speed up the turbo, and cause barking, but this happen slowly, not a sudden machine gun effect

And I dont know this engine, (and not to fond of Wartsilas either)

Re: My Turn- Fault Finding

1 Something blocked the aircooler, either completely sooted up, or parts of the air filter

2 The air filter / silencer collapsed, I have seen this, but it didnt cause the turbo to bark

Re: My Turn- Fault Finding

I order for a turbo to bark the pressure in the scavange pressure has to be higher than the output of the compressor. When this happens (in my experence) there is a good long bark, as all the pressure in the scavange reciver dumps. By the sound of yours it is very fast, as you say like a machine gun...

Re: Fault Finding

We have a lot of problems with the water side. Some of the Engineers are slow to stripp the machine all the way down to the water distributer. Because most of our vessels are on shorts sea trade, the fresh water is shore water, full of limescale, can be very hard water. On some of these machines the...
