Re: Transport Canada issues

I wrote my exams at Halifax office and everyone there was great! Very helpful. I find lots of it is how you approach them. They don’t make the rules they just try to follow them. Some guys go in with chip on their shoulder and argue with them about everything. Having said that I heard to stay away f...

Re: Taxes

Hi Xhead, If you live in Canada you have to pay tax here. The best way to do that is to put part of your pay aside and pay installments 4 times a year. If you don't they will ask for interest on the money you owe in taxes. If you work in an other country and pay tax there you can in most cases subtr...

Re: Common Rail Engine 48/60 cr

On one ship I worked on, I believe it was wärtsilä wasa32 engine, we had problems with our fuel pumps because the fuel temp was to high, turned up to lower the viscosity. Temp somewere over 150C I believe.

Re: Common Rail Engine 48/60 cr

I would look in to the fuel supply system. Is the purifier set up for the right fuel viscosity. Are the fuel filter the recommended type micron etc.

Re: Atlantic Towing looking for full crew

I don't have a problem with newfs getting a job. I don't have a problem with that they hire newfs first but when my company sends me there and the crew treats you like shit and does everything to make you leave because they think a newf should have the job it sucks. I don't want to go there but I ha...

Re: another crew member dies in boat drills

It's crazy that our rescue/lifesaving equipment is to dangerous to use, at drills and exercise, as intended in a real emergency.

Re: Plate cooler

I would contact the manufacture of the cooler, you can add to many plates and mess with the flow rates and actually lose cooling capacety.

Re: Seperator Problem

Hi, Did you have it apart again since you changed the O-rings? It's easy to damage the rectangular ring that's on the lower stainless bowl, the one under the discs, during assemble I did this myself last month. And it gave me a similar problem. How are the bearings check the maintence history if the...

Hi all, I thought if you are working and take part in regular drills you don't need any course for certification? Anybody heard anything like that?

Re: Question regarding working out of country

Hi AudicoupeGT, I worked for several years on foreign flagged vessel. You have to declare your income and pay tax on it in Canada. Next year they will pro rate you to pay installments every quarter, to cover the estimated tax. If you pay in to little you will be dinged for the interest of the outsta...

Re: Regulations for OWS

Hi JK, thanks for your reply. I'm aware of the special areas in MARPOL not sure about fishing zones in Canada though. I'm not the one operating it (and would not, unless i was sure it was legal to do so) but we are having a discussion on board. So if we in Canadian waters its under way but if we lea...
