Re: Post purge sequence on Boiler after emergency trip
Fond memories of singed and non existant eyebrows from flashback days whilst peering through that glass peephole with a manual torch flaming away and thrust into the furnace with cotton waste on the torch. All the torches were welded onto the ends with the firemans initials and who betide anyone who...

Re: Edwin Millar/Jolly Jack
Shocked and saddened to just read JJ's entry into the FWE column. Although I never met him I felt he was one of the major contributers to the site and one of the old school re his experiences of the marine engineering world. I will allways remember the banter we experienced together particularly con...

Re: Caterpillar C8.7 temperature query
Thats a fast old canoe you have there, slammer jobby indeed. When I have encountered similar problems I have used IR temp detectors, being a ray shiner you can isolate temp. in temp. out from seasuction to pumping it back over the side. Pipework, charge air coolers , all heat exchangers, pumps, ther...

Dig deep in that old toolbox.

500,000 SHP Andrew?
Didnt think there was that many SHP in the world.
Biggest one so far is 108,00 SHP so how bigs this ship gonna be?
Gi normous jobby here.
And all on one shaft?
Or a DE version?
Where you gonna build this?
Its all off the clock in terms of reality.

Re: New engine

I see the counterbalance weights on each wheel clearly displayed but the driving rods are very very close to the centre shaft whereby on a loco. they are ...

Re: New engine
Andrew, It would appear to me that we have a crossover of interests here in so much as the semi rotary engine is a IC engine and the chain driven one is steam powered one. This is borne out by the valvegear fitted to the IC engine, looks like 45 or 30 degree cut seats and to boot looks like four spa...

Re: Marine Engineering - Practical Tips & Tricks
Nothing on this subject of late so here is one from the past. Re white metalling a bearing during an emergency repair with the job up in a lathe three jaw chuck in boring out the ID on its last cut you encounter a blow hole. Not a lot of white metal left in the stores to start over so what are you g...
