Re: Belzona, the wonder tool

Where do we start with this...? Band brake surface on large mooring winches (an old 4 point mooring dive ship), diesel engine intercooler end plates, holed pipes, leadscrew repair on a milling machine, water pump scroll casing, main engine seawater inlet elbow coating... all of which were temporary ...

Re: Injection pump sticking problem in Wartsila 32 engines

If the barrels and plungers are so badly worn that you cannot start on diesel fuel then this is likely to be your root cause. When did you last change/overhaul the pumps? On this particular engine they should be replaced at 12000 - 16000 hours although operation on HFO will reduce this somewhat. Pet...

Re: Injection pump sticking problem in Wartsila 32 engines

Agree with the comments above, although the manufacturer will state the engine can be started and stopped on HFO, it is always better to do so on diesel fuel to purge and pumps and injectors of heavy fuel. Are these L'Orange pumps? The newer tier 2 engines have a very late point of injection (about ...

Re: tail shaft alignment

The software used for large shaft alignment is extremely complicated nowadays and take into account shaft axial float (less than a mm), heat expansion of gearboxes and bearings and loading conditions, however I am yet to see one that takes the hydrodynamic lift into consideration, probably because t...

Re: Cylinder liner laquering

The problem is visible on quite a few different engines including some that are less than 5 years old with low running hours so I don't think it is due to any incorrect components. The Manufacturer of one of the engines (MAN) that suffers from lacquering has developed fuel injectors with a narrower ...

Re: Cylinder liner laquering

Thanks for the replies and the interesting links. Engines that seem to suffer the worst (in my experience) are medium speed, around the 4000 - 5000 kw power range and 750 rpm. The popular belief is that the change to Ultra Low Sulfur fuel (less than 10 ppm) in 2009 has led to lacquering becoming a b...

Cylinder liner laquering

Good day! I was wondering if anyone has experienced an increase in cylinder liner lacquering over the past few years? I'm referring to the yellow gummy varnish that accumulates in liner walls and bakes to a hard shiny finish (you may call it something else?). Here in New Zealand I have inspected sev...
