Re: Low charge air pressure
Have heard of instances where similar to your description below has happened and it is also described by ABB in the attached file, page 29. In short the deposits that build up on the worn parts and keeps clearances tight and the turbocharger efficient. When the turbocharger is cleaned, and returned ...

Re: Another Carnival Triumph
Interesting article from gCaptain in response to the comments from Senator Rockafeller. http://gcaptain.com/cost-rescue/ Not sure I completely agree with the view point, I think the Coastguard have saved Carnival a lot of money, relating to salvage costs and probably reduced the size of the lawsuits...

Re: CCTV in the engine room
I sailed on a series of ships with cameras in the ER space, and on one of the ships the quick thinking mate on watch stopped an engine which he saw something (fuel) spraying everywhere. There were no cameras in the control room and I would not have been happy with that, they are a novelty at first a...

Re: Emma's engine under water
Taken from Lloyds List 25th March 2013 The world’s largest boxship’s engineroom is stripped, dried and cleaned in Sicily THE dramatic flooding of the world’s biggest boxship Emma Maersk is being blamed on badly installed cable penetrations between the engineroom and shaft tunnel, inspections have re...

Re: Emma's engine under water
I've watched this discussion and have not been able to say much about the incident. The immediate actions of the crew I don't know, but I will say that the water tight door was shut.
Sorry, cant/wont say any more.

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
Lloyds list - 28-11-2012 IMO chief questions where report is after nearly a year THE focus of some countries on prosecution, rather than investigation, after a maritime accident is the Achilles heel of the passengership industry and action must be taken to learn from the mistakes made in the Costa C...

Re: Massive container ship on fire and adrift
I was also very surprised at this, as an ex. seafarer I would have at least hoped he had the notion to phone or visit the bridge and mentioned the smell, especially after he had "spotted a thin, wispy plume of brownish-yellow smoke rising from between two stacks of containers". Hindsight i...

Re: Massive container ship on fire and adrift
Taken ffrom Lloyds list - Friday 23rd November 2012. Passenger Johnny Rosen reveals what happened in the hours immediately after fire broke out on MSC Flaminia MOST maritime disasters occur far out at sea, well away from the cameras, and attract little public attention. Rarely is an independent witn...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
Below are the first comments I have seen from any of the Engineers. Costa Concordia captain failed to understand scale of disaster Giuseppe Pilon, who rushed to the Concordia's engine room immediately after the accident, and another engine room officer, Giovanni Iaccarino, spoke publicly about the t...

A magistrates' court has found a director of a crewing agent operating in the UK guilty of withholding approximately £21,000 in pay from four seafarers. The court in Liverpool ordered Susan Myers, who is also known as Susan Leech, a director of Relay Marine UK Limited, to pay fines and costs totalli...

Re: Alfa Laval PU 100E
I remember at least a couple times when I was fourth that I saw something exactly like this. The LO purifer (Alfa Laval) woud be shut down for routine overhaul, nothing abnormal with its operation, but when opened up all the solids would be on only one side of the bowl and no obvious signs of lumps ...

Re: Container ship fires
Feasible yes, but some quick thoughts below; Any system to operate properly would need to take up space, potentially reducing the volume that the shipper has available for his goods. Containers are roughly handled, and the allowable space around the box can be tight, meaning the extenal conection to...
