Re: Welding on crane boom

Still working on the 13" it's got me. When I get off I'll ask around in the local..... 5 week trips, chopper on and off. Pipelay tower is a big piece of agricultural crap, a very simplistic machine made complicated by those that look after it. The old girl is getting on for 9 years old. Still n...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Sorry to disappoint Merlyn. Job was cancelled as the welders were too late in providing a procedure so the ship sailed back to the field. Without the procedure I couldnt get the management of change procedure completed so the job was postponed until the next suitable port call. Unfortunately were no...

Re: Welding on crane boom

I don't see it as a promotion, better leave ratio and salary only.

Ah, the CW vs CCW question, of course, I have known all along, but I'm not the one to spoil your fun......

Re: Welding on crane boom

Looks to me like the CAC SW or the VC line has finally let go and the bilge alarms have all sounded with me on the tank top. The water is slowly lapping round my bearded chin as I consider drilling a hole in the hull to let the water back out.......... Do I pack my bags or admit I am out my depth......

Re: Welding on crane boom

And here was me thinking I was in a similar league just because I have used oxy/accet cutting gear inside a scavenge belt to remove bits of liner, making up a top hat for the crosshead/ piston rod palm joint to keep the LO flow, removing the turbocharger rotor and making blanks before 5 legging it a...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Ok, I will admit to Glencannon ringing a bell, but you may have to elaborate! As for the Raytek thermometer, we have these, I even have one at home for my wood burner flue (just because I wanted to know), and for my Land Rover, looking for the overheating bearing/ diff etc..... As for the Monel meta...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Fantastic rant that I am sure we all agree is worthy of its own thread! My opinion is that we are breeding/ encouraging a generation of button pushers and control room operators. 'It's the sensor, Chief' I hear a lot. My standard response is, have you gone out to check? The standard answer is 'there...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Cheers folks. Decent explanation from the crane group. Got advice and welding directions from the manufacturer and getting a welding procedure drawn up by a well respected local fabrication company who have proper coded welders. Also got a statement from the manufacturer that says no load test is re...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Hi again, Just for your info, this was the reply I got from the company crane group manager. "Crane is not under classification, slewbearing deferral certificate is produced by Lloyds for us, we don’t do it for Lloyds. We use their service as 3rd party competent person. This in fact can be done...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Hi again folks, It's been a week or so and I have just had a reply from our crane 'guru' the vessel superintendent has not said a peep. So, the crane, according to the 'guru' is not under any classification and there is no need to consult class. I am not in the big seat very long, just coming up 2 y...

Re: Welding on crane boom

Apologies for the above, prematurely hit the submit button, it's been a long day..... As I was saying, The vessel is UK flagged, LR Classed, and engaged in offshore construction but not working in UK. The crane is Classes as per LR rules and subject to 5 year surveys. I have sent my concerns to the ...
