Re: Injector body lapping
Hi Popeye, Thanks for your reply Popeye. Decided between the two chiefs to replace them as last two times (3000hrs service interval) they were cleaned, checked and adjusted where necessary. After fitting the spare set (with new nozzles).. yes we did have fuel leaking through the nozzle nut. So the d...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Apologies for the looooonnng delay. After talking to yourselves we gave up flushing the engine as the company were not happy with the amount of treatment we were consuming. Then we started to get many Mechanical seals start to fail every 2-3 months or so and these engines were only running 2-3hrs a ...

Injector body lapping
Was listening in on an heated discussion between the Chief and Super today about the correct procedure for lapping in a injector body. Myself and C/E were new to vessel and unfortunately there was no dedicated injector overhauling kit available for use. With relatively low experience in this area an...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Apologies Big Pete, I missed your post before. Water raises/lowers with startup/shutdown. I hope this will satisfy your curiosity Merlyn and allow you to move back from the edge of your seat  As far as I can find out we do not have a smokemeter on board, so unfortunately I have not had the ple...

Re: Cat 3508 JW pressure issues
Have you tried when the unit is running to crack the bleeds around the engine to see if any air is present?
Is it possible to observe water level any rise or fall in header tank during running?

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
TDC I have read about a very similar issue somewhere else. This may/may not have been your post. We typically use maxiguard as well but due to the colour of the water it is impossible to accuratly add the correct amount of treatment to the system. I agree that it has to be something to do with the ...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Ah Merlyn. I did have a giggle reading that and yet still very useful information/tutorial. Just like an MOT emission check. (Anyone not from UK. An MOT is a test all vehicles between 3 and 40 years old must carry out. Essentially checked cars are not dangerous and systems work correctly for the roa...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
I know this may be out there but has it been determined that the corrosion is not being generated by electrolysis? Was the alternator overhauled at the same time? If so were the ground straps for the alternator and the engine properly reconnected and any sacrificial anodes in the cooling system rep...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Here is me making assumptions. Oops! When you said 4/5 gas detector I thought you meant one of those meters you use for confined spaces. Where detecting HC was done by using the LEL function. My understanding of these meters is all classroom based as the company policy is no crew are allowed to ente...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Great idea with gas detector. Have you done this yourself before? I believe so yes, there was two guys present from the outfit but it was always the same two. The overhaul company are arguing they did everything right and we did something to cause the problem. Typical blame game. At least the politi...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Vessel was built in '03. I haven't found reference to the auxiliaries manufacture date. Yes, you are correct. Bottom end, top end, new turbo, LO cooler, air cooler plates and all new 6 heads (well 12 new heads as they have all been replaced). I may be missing a few bits as I wasn't on board when thi...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Hi Merlyn, We have already checked the stats are operating correctly and check the calibration of FW temp probe using the same water bath, all okay. I think this giant kettle thing you call i think is what I would call water bath. Sounds similar at least. When you say boil up. Do you mean check when...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
According to manual the operating temperature should be between 75 and 90deg C. Due to constant flushing of system. No coolant treatment is added. Also the system we are supplied with requires a colour identification change to adjust to correct amount of additive which due to sludgy water is impossi...

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
Update: Engines are kept at roughly 60-70deg C and run between 74 and 78 degC When starting the units throw out some water and when warming up there is bubbling in the header tank. Once warm and on load there is no bubbling. The back to back crew did not flush the auxilliary and upon our return the ...

Re: 3D Printing Spare Parts
Concept of the idea of having a few raw materials than can cover various parts is great. I suspect most of us see the benefits of such a device on a vessel but also many limitations both politically and in practice. One major draw back I see is why would a manufacturer provide drawing to create such...
