Re: 4th class textbooks
Two books that I found useful were Marine Boilers 3rd edition by GTH Flanagan and Diesel Engines 3rd edition by AJ Wharton. Both are published by Butterworth Heinemann and are part of the "Marine Engineering" series, also referred to as the "candy series". They can be found on Am...

3rd class motor question
Hello all,
How can you measure the clearance volume for a cylinder of a diesel engine?
The question also asks about how one would measure the bearing clearance of the top and bottom ends of a con. rod, I have an answer for this latter part, but any insight would be appriciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: 3rds EKG-Double Bottom Tank Question
I wondered about this same question a few weeks ago when I was studying for the 3rd class ekg. From what I understand, MARPOL states that tankers of double hull construction are to use the wing and double bottom tanks surrounding cargo tanks and pump rooms as ballast water tanks, meaning that they c...

Water lubricated tailshaft question
Just wondering,
With a tailshaft that is lined with a bronze liner, how thick does the liner have to be (for example for a shaft of 12" diameter)?
Thanks

Re: 4th Wages
3 years ago I worked with ULS as a 4th. Take home pay used to be around $6K per month worked with normal working days of 8 hours (there was alot of overtime in there as well though). I don't recall the hourly wage, but I remember that Saturdays were time and a half, Sundays double time. Unfortunatle...

FRC course for OSV's in Canada
Hi, this is a question regarding Fast Rescue Craft training in the Offshore Industry, specifically that of eastern Canada. I took the Canadian Coast Guard in house FRC course a year or two ago, this course was called RHIOT, or Rigid Hull Inflatable Operations. In total, it was a 18 day course on ope...

3rd class GK question
Hi, I've been going through some notes while gearing up for the 3rd class general knowledege exam, and I was hoping for some clarification on a question regarding sterntubes. How do you determine the wear down of an oil lubricated sterntube bearing, and what would a typical maximum wear down value b...

3rd class oral exam questions
Hi,
I'm currently going through the examination process for a Canadian 3rd class motor certificate and I am curious about the sort of questions examiners might ask in the oral examination. Any insight would be appriciated.
Thanks
