Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
For me it isn't so much about the issuing of licenses as it is about Transport Canada's handling of this situation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't TC have a 5 year transition period to finalize the 2010 Manila Amendments? TC finished this period 2 months behind schedule with a document that was...

R507 refrigerant gas
I'm currently working offshore on a pipe lay ship, our provision refrigeration plant has a leak that we are searching for.The system is charged with Unicool R-507 refrigerant. The only test equipment i have on board the ship is a unitor dye tracer fluid and uv light. These might be stupid questions ...

Re: Engine Room Rating
Hi Aron, everything worked out for me in the end. I've got my 4th class license and have now started studying for my 2nd class. It was a solid up hill battle but the rewards have been well worth it. I've been in full time employment for 3 years now. I'll email you with a few suggestions and will try...

First Aid
My first aid has expired. I've heard the rules have changed. I have a 4th class, can I legally sail without a 1st aid cert?
Will basic marine 1st aid do? What about foreign going ships?
Thanks, Jon

Re: Applied Mechanics
Thanks Max,
I keep telling myself that the exams can't be that difficult since everyone else has passed them.
But still, they can seem a little daunting at first. Reed's it is.

Applied Mechanics
Does anyone have any recommendations for applied mechanics study material. I was given a print out of questions by my local college but this jumps from question to question, getting harder as they go. I'm not really absorbing anything so I need to get back to basics. Also, are there any short course...

4th class orals
I'm heading in for my 4th class orals fairly soon. Does anyone know some common questions I may be asked?
I've heard I'll be asked to draw a diagram of blowing a boiler sight-glass.
Anything else you can guarantee I'll be asked?

Re: anyone have experience with reliance offshore??
They're a good company and the pay is not bad. I worked for them on the east coast with no problems. But look out, because the summer with them is busy and you may find yourself with more work than you want.

Thanks Dieselduck.
I have heard the ship (Stena Carron) is in really good condition.
But I'm really interested to know what the crew are like and if the pay is fair.
Thanks again.

Re: what is so called CANADIAN EXPERIENCE
Keep your head up Szrad. I moved here 3 years ago and it took me 2 years to finally find a job. Since then I have done contract and full time work with lay offs here and there. But I've noticed that once I got experience and made some contacts things got better. Try not to get frustrated just keep a...

Stena
Has anyone ever worked for Stena out of Newfoundland.
Just wondering what the work situation is like out there.
Any thought on the Crew, the pay and ship would be great.
Thanks guys.
