Re: Mechanics Formula
Believe it or not, jwinsor, the formula sheet you get for applied mechanics is the same sheet you get for all other exams. Now I know what your first thought is going to be: "This guy is nuts, the sheet only has like four formulas pertaining to applied mechanics, surely Transport Canada doesn't...

Re: Canada shipyard and the GOC
Davie Shipyards is only a stone's throw away from my house, I wish them all the luck in the world. However, as long as the current unions are in place there will never be a completed ship coming out of that shipyard. The only hope is that the unions could be at least modified to reflect modern times...

Re: Fuel consumption VS Distance + Speed change
Again, Reed's volume 4 chapter 7
General expression for voyage consumption
new cons/old cons = (new displ/old displ)exp 2/3 x (new speed/old speed)2 x (new dist/old dist)
new cons = 850 x 1 x (19/24)2 x (1645/2061) = 850 x 0.6267361 x 0.7981562 = 425 tons
Answer is A

Re: fuel consumption VS speed change
Reed's volume 4 chapter 7 It can be assumed that a major portion of the designed operational speed range is proportional, and that for any two points within this range the specific fuel consumption is constant. On the same trip, it can be assumed that the ships' displacement is also constant. You ar...

Hello PeteyCoco, I will kill two birds with one stone here and give you some insight into the industry while explaining to you and Martin my take on the 'aversion to young people'. In the last ten years many of the old chief engineers have retired, they have been replaced gradually by their second e...

Hello Jrvakil, I looked up your model AC unit on the Daikin website and found that it is fitted with a hermetically sealed compressor. This is the same type of compressor fitted on domestic refrigerators, only slightly larger in size and capacity. This type of compressor requires no maintenance for ...

Re: Reoccuring 2nd class gen. and motor knowledge questions
Hello Jason, Just look at the syllabus that Transport Canada gave you, everything on there is fair game and is likely to show up on the exams. One sure bet on the motor exam is anything relating to fuel injection: sketch and describe a fuel injector, fuel injection pump, helix controlled fuel meteri...

Re: tightening sequence
I had an identical occurrence to the one that Big Pete mentioned except not so obvious to figure out. Turns out that on this older model generator engine all bearing sets have the same part number, even if they are undersized. A new undersized bearing was fitted by mistake, whenver the big end bolts...

Re: Domestic Surge Protectors-Not So Good
Whenever a ground fault occurs at the main switchboard low voltage section of our ship, before we go on an extensive troubleshooting bonanza we do a mental check: 'Has a new crew member joined the ship within the last week?' If the answer to this question is yes, then there is a 95% chance that the ...

Hello Jeff,
One way or another you have to spend the time: study time and sea time. There is no escaping this fact and there is no easy route. Both methods of acquiring your tickets will require the same amount of effort and time, the only difference is in the details and the timing.

Re: 3rds EKG-Double Bottom Tank Question
My experience on tankers has been that double-bottom tanks forward of the cargo pump room are not to carry anything other than ballast water, whereas double-bottom tanks in the cargo pump room and the engine room can carry all hydrocarbons necessary for the operation of the ship: diesel fuel, lubric...

What you asking for is not as simple as one might think, I suggest you obtain a copy of Machinery's Handbook by Industrial Press or similar manuals such as IPT's Pipe Trades Handbook or IPT's Industrial Fasteners Handbook.
