Re: Canada Transportation Act Review - Report

The Review heard repeatedly in consultations and from stakeholder submissions that seafarers are aging and the pool is diminishing, not just in Canada, but throughout the Western world. Recruitment is difficult—young people are not attracted to the maritime lifestyle and the prospect of long periods...

Re: Changes in CCG

Alright JK, This one you have to explain for me. Usually, the idea of merging departments or 'regions' involves one of the two disappearing to save money. In my opinion, the Coast Guard base in Québec city will probably never close because there is always serious ice bottlenecks a few miles from the...

Re: Let's do a gas price comparison

Every time I complain about the price of gas someone tells me: "Have you ever compared the price per litre for other liquids, such as wine or even perfume? Cheap wine starts at $10 per litre and you would be hard pressed to find perfume below $100 per litre"

Re: Submarine Trip....

For various reasons, the hull and equipment of a ship are affected by magnetic fields and tend to become 'impregnated' by the fields over time. For example when major steel-work is done on a ship, the magnetic compass needs to be re-adjusted to compensate for the change in magnetic signature of the ...

I wouldn't give away my 'field notes' for free, I'm surprised they're even considering asking for a set from the Russians.

Re: Guild on strike (?)

Hello Martin, Yes, it is true that the officers working for the tanker division of Desgagnés went on strike on the 16th of November. Until recently, the deck officers were with the Guild and the engineer officers were with the CMOU. The contract that the CMOU had with the company expired in mid-June...

Re: New Fuels?

Most oil majors are already converting their old refining lines so that all fractions below diesel fuel are reformed into petroleum coke. Soon most refineries will no longer have bunkers and bitumens because 'pet coke' is worth a lot more per ton and more light fractions can be produced in the moder...

Re: A little off topic

Having been raised in a military family and having served in the Canadian Navy for ten years myself, I totally approve of your 'off-topic' subject. Again this year somewhere around the fifth of November, as per every year, a barely twenty-something young adult asked me in a store why I had a 'little...

Re: Generator load sharing issue

Hello Martin, I think I have an answer for Kazi, a similar situation has occurred to me several times before. The problem in each case turned out to be a defective AVR card or maladjusted excitation setting on the AVR. If the excitation setting is not the same on both alternators, the reactive load ...
