We are all Doomed (again)
Interesting article below from the Royal Institute of Naval Architects, about the prevalence of High Blood Pressure in Seafarers, it appears that 20 years of exposure to the normal noise levels in a ship's Engine Room can cause it, apart from all the other issues relating to smoking, drinking, diet,...

Engine Explosion
Interesting story of poor maintenance on a Ro Ro ferry leading to the top end of the main Engine connecting rod failing, and major damage to the engine and fire in the Machinery spaces.

Covid & mental Health at Sea.
An interesting read on what some companies are doing for their Seafarers, others of course, do nothing.

Re: Electricity Troubleshooting
I recently remembered a problem I had many years ago on a small survey ship which had a similar problem. The Captain had got a shoreside Electrician to wire up some extra lights on deck and the fuses kept blowing, it turned out the electrician thought he was dealing with a live and neutral system, t...

And what about the bronze tools used on Oil Tankers that didn't produce an incendive spark when dropped or hit?? Hardened with Beryllium if I remember correctly, so you could make functional Hammers, Chisels and spanners out of it, always disappearing because of their high scrap value, hugely expens...

Re: LO consumption high Wartsila 46 Engine
Hi there, Long ago everyone used to hone cylinder liners, when overhauling engines, then some Engine makers started to produce piston rings which they claimed did not require the liners to be honed. In my experience, the cost of honing the liners is much more than covered by the saving in L.O. consu...

Hi Merlyn, We have a small workshop. Unfortunately the Museum is entirely run by Volunteers and there was a Political Bust up before I became involved and the group of volunteers that did all the engineering walked out. I got the oil fired boiler running and through Survey and then, with a couple of...

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates
Yes JK, I sometimes regret that I didn't take more pictures in my early days at sea but the cost of film and processing was high, and the photographs that I did take have faded to nothing!!! (Should have used Kodak Ektachrome, instead of Fuji Film) Also, like most of us, a lot of the things that I w...

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates
Yes Merlyn, The Technology is well before our time, Thomas Newcomen invented his "Atmospheric Engine" in 1712, James Watt developed it, but locked down all innovation by patenting everything until 1800, the Cornish Engineers then took over, they had all those Tin and copper mines but no Co...

Re: Is Pipe tunnel an enclosed space?
I would say that although the Pipe Tunnel Duct keel has access at both ends it would still be regarded as an enclosed space, because leaking fuel etc can fill the space with flammable / Toxic Gases and corrosion taking place could deplete the Oxygen levels. However, if it is fitted with a supply fan...

Hi Revolver, only thing that I can think of is have you checked the free length of the springs? And is the bowl spinning at the right speed? They usually slow down while sludging, maybe it is slow to pick up speed again?

Re: Bunkering Operation at ARA ( Amsterdam-Ryotterdam- Antwerp)
I spent 30 years as Chief Engineer at Sea. Japan, North America and UK were pretty good, Japan you often got a little more than you thought you should. Most owners/ operators get their fuel through a broker who searches the World for the cheapest price per ton. How can you sell your fuel cheaper tha...
