Re: Tips & Tricks
The post on the Oil Mist Detector was very informative indeed. What I learned from it that I never knew was that the synthered bronze filters must be with the rough side on the outside! OMD planned maintenance is very important. The funny thing is that most of the checks and maintenance only takes a...

Re: Vacuum distillation plant
The most crucial part about FWG's is to keep the salinity as low as possible, especially if you use the distillate to feed a boiler  I have witnessed a case where the "engineers" did not do the keep a close eye on the chemical dosing and had the salinometer disabled. The plat...

Re: The nuts and bolts
It is good practice to anneal new copper washers. They come out a lot softer, which is what you want to form a compression seal. Perform a small test yourself. Take two brand new copper washers, anneal the one, then test with a sharp object like a scriber, or perform a simple bend test. See which on...

Re: Wartsila vasa 32
These engines are in my opinion the VERY BEST medium speed diesels EVER to be delivered. Unfortunatley they are no longer being produced  Maintenance on them are dead easy. Can be done by just following the excellent manual. I realise this is not answering the question, but the point I am tryi...

Re: Fittings and Threads
Not sure what you are doing, but we just did a inventory of all are pipe/hose fittings on the dredge that I work on. My oiler did not have a clue as to the what anything was. I gave him a copy of the McMaster-Carr and Parker catalogs . Seemed to help him and the Chief was pleased with the outcome. ...

Re: Extending a chrome vanadium socket
Chrome Vanadium tools can be welded. Part it in a lathe with a narrow parting tool where the "splines" stop and the back end that accommodates the drive starts. Grind the chrome off the cut edges to form a 45 degree chamfer. Now select a mild steel pipe of suitable diameter that the nut ca...

Re: The nuts and bolts
This is not an easy one. All I can comment is that this is where your experience as a Marine Engineer should guide you through. Proper knowledge of materials, being aware of your own capabilities. Carefull not to overtighten, loctite can be used to ensure it doesnt come loose. Proper anealing of cop...

Re: Fault Finding
Sad to say that most decent purifiers come with an intermediate and major service kit. When performing the service, the kit is to be used in its ENTIRETY  So after boxing up the machine, look for any o-rings left in the kit? Seems like a good idea to me  Scale build up on the operating...

Re: Assumption Kills
There really is no excuse for this. ENCLOSED SPACES KILL posters are posted all over in the accomodation on our vessels. SMS is in place. PTW everybody MUST be aware of as it is part of the new joiner safety introduction, which is conducted by a senior officer on board. Regular safety meetings to be...

As professionals we get our jobs right 24/7/365. Employers need to get their jobs right only once a month. PAYDAY
Then some of them cant even do that.
Choose a reputable company out there, do your market research, dont be dissapointed. There are many good companies.

Re: Corrosion pieces
I currently sail on AHST vessels. Corrosion pieces are the nnorm in our sea water systems. Planned maintenance schedule to inspect and replace at regular intervals, not sure how often. Spares are kept on board, normally 2 in use, 2 spare. I read in above posts that some people actually galvanize the...

Re: What Would You Do?
Have to admit that sounding tanks in the middle of the night sure is a pain in the ass. On our vessels we have remote sounding system on a computer which really simplifies things, so problems can be picked up quite easily. If you do not have this luxury, part of good watchkeeping is to physically go...
