Re: Marine crew for EC NTCL vessels
Don't know about that tug but the other two were junk 20 years ago. You would have to be very brave or very stupid to tackle those jobs. The company won't give their name on the ad, so that should tell you something.

Re: Permanent Foreign Seafarer Entry into Canada
I am retired now and do some occasional relief work. On the day I pulled the plug I told the young guys aboard ship that they would never retire as Canadian sailors. CETA, Manila 2010, and the Trans Pacific partnership will see to that. No class of ticket will save you. Only working for 3rd world wa...

6 months after Manila 2010 is in force.
H R Manager to company president. " I don't understand why we didn't get any resumes from Canadian Chief Engineers; after all, we are offering minimum wage."

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
Question???????. How can anyone write a 4th class now? They don't have any exams for thermo, applied etc. Young guy I know was told by T.C.(ST. Johns) that he would have to do 3rd exams. Kinda stupid to do 3rds and end up with a 4th. He checked with Dartmouth and they couldn't give him an answer at ...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
As you say, it is a good base but a good base would be preferable in your early 20s; not a lot of good in mid 40s or 50s. Who can afford to be entry level at that stage of life?

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
We are not Engineers either. I've had this discussion many times over the years with the rabid types who think this occupation is the be all and end all. Real Engineers are the people who designed and built the machinery we work on. We are little bits of mechanics, electricians, pipefitters, welders...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
All the hoopla about tickets is irrelevant anyway. When CETA and TIPP are implemented in full, there will be no more Canadian sailors. That's O K for us older guys but I would urge younger people to find a new career while you have time or figure out how to live on 3rd world wages in Canada. That se...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
Just had some experience with two of those 2010 Chiefs. If anyone needed some training ,they did. I was surprised they actually had second class tickets. One would have made a good oiler, the other good ballast. They couldn't compare to the guy who had the original 1st class.

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
It should never have been instituted in the first place. If you want the ticket, serve the time and do the exams. How the hell can you justify giving 1st class tickets to guys who yesterday only had 3rds and 4ths.

These guys have got to be dreaming in technicolor. 102 K, no rotation, 50 year old boats. Might get a 4th class to work for it under the conditions listed.

de salinators/ watermakers
Are there any regulations regarding the distance from the coast that a watermaker can be used. A manual for one brand stated 50 miles while another stated 25 miles, a third manual doesn't specify any distance. I would assume that something as important as your water supply would be regulated somehow.

MED
Again on MED Refresher!!. What about tickets that expire on Dec 31 2016. ( tickets that have recently been renewed) It says they can be turned in for STCW 2010 CoC--CoP for balance of 5 year term. Does this mean that the refresher course is not required?? Who writes up these regs? I think it would h...

Re: MED refresher
Just looking at the requirements for STCW 2010. It seems to me that if your certificate expires on Dec 31, 2016 or before you do not need the MED refresher course until you go to renew again (i.e.) in 2021. Am I not understanding this correctly?

Re: Atlantic Towing looking for full crew
As for looking after their own; Atlantic Towing is a New Brunswick company, owned by Irving Oil. When I worked with them there were Poles, Russians, Bulgarians etc. working there and none of them lived in Nfld. In fact I was the only Newf on the ship.
