Good Analysis
Conrod seems to have the situation well appraised. I am now trying to get on with a maritime training facility or find someone who would like to establish their own in house training, preferable a company based operation with little success. In part I feel it is because of former union ties. My only...

If anyone has the opportunity to attend SMM in Hamburg Sept 23-26 don't miss the chance. this is the grad daddy of all maritime machinery expos with live exhibits. I had hoped to finally attend this year but again looks like it won't be happening. It is only held every other year.

Interesting
I have never encountered an auxiliary blower on a four stroke. The idea does seem to have merit however, most turbocharged four strokes have an aneroid installed to limit fuel rack advance during acceleration to limit smoke and allow the turbo to catch up to the engine load. I did install a system y...

Problems with O-rings
The proliferation of new engine licensees has resulted in some shortcomings in regards to quality of materials and workmanship as they scurry to source materials. There have been instances of problems with O-rings in which the fuel was suspect however, further investigatioan showed that the material...

Homogenizers
Homogenizers do have merit if installed properly. The most effective location is immediately before the fuel booster pumps. Results achieved have been reduction in emmissions indicated by increased economiser cleanliness and a clearer stack. Years ago I worked on a few projects involving them with s...

Centinel
I stand corrected: However, I think this system in the long run would have more operational implications than benefits. From Cummins Website: Cummins Centinel Available for Aftermarket Purchase For Immediate Release March 23, 2005 Las Vegas - Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) announced that the CENTINELTM Adv...

May be problematic
Years ago we used to regularly dump the crankcase oil into the HFO bunker tanks and burn it however, such is not the practice today as the heavily compounded oils and the vast increase in engine ratings indicates this is not a good practice. The detergent additives create a large amount of ash when ...

GOM
You'd be far better off to pursue something in another area. The companies in the GOM are all very clannish, anti-union and although they hire those from other areas they tend to treat them a little less favorable than locals. Seems to be quite a few Canadian companies looking for people these days.

Shoreside work
Some states require stationary engineers licenses. Check out Think Energy or MerchantPowerPlant.com They have many shore side jobs in power plants, etc. Hard to get on as a surveyor these days with any of the class societies without degree and unlimited ticket. Also check out Monster.com as Think po...

Miss River Collision of Tanker/Barge
Talk about controversy. Towboat piloted by unlicensed operator. Wages in the gulf area are not that great and unions are discouraged. Do you think it is time for them to smarten up? Still no excuse for the owner of the tug to have it underway without adequate certificated personnel. Seems this opera...
