Re: MDO vs. No. 2 DO

Most regulatory bodies require both the emergency diesel generator and lifeboat tanks to be filled with MGO grade DMA. While this fuel does have a flashpoint lower than 60 DegC it does have a lower pour point maing it suitable for use in lower temperatures. I would defiitely not use MDO in either ap...

Re: Fault Finding

Blockages in the operating water system is one of the most common separator problems. All it takes is a bit of scale in an orifice or on a bowl surface to cause a problem with bowl opening and closing. Installation of a good demineralizing filter in the operating water supply is a good way to get ar...

Re: Cruise Ship Lock Out procedures in the Dark ages. Why?

Sad day when anyone gets hurt and we have just had a recent death in the US fleet. When they built the NCL new passenger ships for US flag (Only one remaining) the AMO started an in depth high voltage electrical course for the engineers inlcuding specific training for entrance into podded propulsion...

Re: Tanker companys

Crowley now has 30/30 rotation on the new ATB's. Check on their website for contact info. Will be relaxing in my hot tub! If you go with US Shipping make sure you find out what they want to put you on. They still have a few of the old ITB's running and most would rather get a root canal than sail on...

Re: Foreign tanker companies

Lot's of foreign companies hiring however, it's a bit hard to sign on first trip as Chief. Perhaps a bit easier to sign on as 2nd to get in with someone. LNG outfits are looking for sharp candidates willing to go through the orientation process, Teekay, Shell, BW, etc.

Re: Tanker companys

US Shipping may not be a good choice as they are skating on thin ice. As in most dying outfits their CFO bailed out with a golden parachute worth almost $1 billion. Can't say about Seabulk anymore as they have chartered out or sold a few ships. Check out the AMO operated units with OSG or the ATB's ...

Planimeter Used for calculating the area of an indicator card ~ last time I saw one used was way back in my youth watching my Dad read cards for an old triple expansion up and downer.

Inhumanity to Engines

Quoted a well respected Brit Engineer in my title. Seems Wartsila has cranked out another license to a Chinese engine builder. I think Madzng missed my point regarding the welding. The yard refused to build to GL class because they knew they couldn't meet their demanding quality and aligned with a l...
