Re: Older Ships

Here's a dandy photo. Notice the man on the ladder, sans any PPE, soogieing or painting the accommodations block. There are mats drying on the aft boom.

Older Ships

Merlyn sent me this great photo of his beginning in the industry. Look at that beautiful paddle wheeler in the front berth! From Merlyn: "When I started out era, the ship in the corner was the old up and downer, the start of it all for me. Also our firms paddlers. All gone sadly." Merlyn.j...

Re: Engine cannot start

I've only had non-starting engines twice ( I'm lucky)
One was failed wiring in the panel and the second was we forgot to put the engine pre-heat on coming off the dock.
Good luck in tracking down your problem.

Penlee Lifeboat Disaster

Penlee lifeboat, the Solomon Browne and the Union Star crew were lost off the coast of Cornwall in England 37 years ago. The Union Star was a brand new ship who had lost power due to water contamination of the fuel. The ship negotiation with the salvage tug broke down over the Open Form, then with a...

HMS Endurance Flooding from Captain’s Blog

Interesting read. When you are in the ice, this is your biggest fear.

Re: Russian Floating Dock Sinks with Aircraft Carrier onboard!

Apparently there was a loud snap from the Halifax dock and she went under with all the equipment stored on it. Good thing Davies reopened, those floating docks were the only ones on the east coast that could lift the Louis S St Laurent. She’s too wide or can’t get over the sill of the rest.

NTSB Fire Findings.

What caught my eye was the plastic tuing for fuel. I am aware of a uptake fire that caused a worse fire when the plastic tubes on the emergency diesel melted and contributed to a much worse fire. It was luck and hard work of the crew and the arrival of a SAR vessel with pumps that saved the ship. ht...

Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans Report

Tucked away in this article about Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans report is this interesting tidbit: The report also recommends that the Canadian Coast Guard become a separate statutory agency, making it accountable to the federal transport minister and allowing for more long-term capital p...

Ship procurement hits a snag.

The joys of government procurement. I’m sure the project team is pulling their hair out as they gather their documentation. https://postmedia.us.janrainsso.com/static/server.html?origin=https%3A%2F%2Fnationalpost.com%2Fnews%2Fcanada%2Ffeds-ordered-to-postpone-award-of-60b-warship-contract-because-of...

Russian Icebreaker Fire on dock

I don't know if I'd want to work on this unlucky ship! This is after the Russian
floating dock sank with an aircraft carrier on it.
