HMS Endurance Flooding from Captain’s Blog

Interesting read. When you are in the ice, this is your biggest fear.

Re: Russian Floating Dock Sinks with Aircraft Carrier onboard!

Apparently there was a loud snap from the Halifax dock and she went under with all the equipment stored on it. Good thing Davies reopened, those floating docks were the only ones on the east coast that could lift the Louis S St Laurent. She’s too wide or can’t get over the sill of the rest.

NTSB Fire Findings.

What caught my eye was the plastic tuing for fuel. I am aware of a uptake fire that caused a worse fire when the plastic tubes on the emergency diesel melted and contributed to a much worse fire. It was luck and hard work of the crew and the arrival of a SAR vessel with pumps that saved the ship. ht...

Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans Report

Tucked away in this article about Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans report is this interesting tidbit: The report also recommends that the Canadian Coast Guard become a separate statutory agency, making it accountable to the federal transport minister and allowing for more long-term capital p...

Ship procurement hits a snag.

The joys of government procurement. I’m sure the project team is pulling their hair out as they gather their documentation. https://postmedia.us.janrainsso.com/static/server.html?origin=https%3A%2F%2Fnationalpost.com%2Fnews%2Fcanada%2Ffeds-ordered-to-postpone-award-of-60b-warship-contract-because-of...

Russian Icebreaker Fire on dock

I don't know if I'd want to work on this unlucky ship! This is after the Russian
floating dock sank with an aircraft carrier on it.

Dr Olivia Hooker

Dr Hooker was the first black woman to serve in the USCG during WW2.
She may not have been on their ships, but she lived a long and interesting life.

Re: MPR2019 on the horizon, finally

“Renewal time frame is a bit of a red herring, 12 month sea time in charge of a watch in five year.“

This is an issue for shore engineers. Right now as long as you are a tech superintendent, with a letter of compliance, you could keep your ticket active in the same 5 year term.

you have to speak and write français , I guess that is how that cut down applicants. If you can't read it, you're not qualified.

Re: Premature pipe failure

Check that the jumper pieces are on the flanges, the gaskets insulate sections of pipe.

On one ship I was on the CE had the main sea strainers coated with Belzona Superglide.

Re: Dock Damaged with CCG Ship Drydocked

It is astounding that someone would actually cut the cables with a ship up. The rudders were out, bottom valves apart and the seabay open. I wonder if the genius thought it would float away.
