Re: Boiler safety valve testing?
The boilers fitted here have 2 safety valves on each, and in order to test them; we put a gag (supplied by the manufacturer) on one of them, flash the boiler in manual until the one lifts, stop the fire, then do the same process for the other. They are removed during docking for testing, but the sur...

Re: First Class Naval Arc
You may well be right, Big Pete. I took 'floating at neutral equilibrium' to mean floating at 'arf and 'arf. Perhaps that is wrong, who knows, but it is how I would have approached it had I seen in during my exam.

Re: First Class Naval Arc
If I remember correctly, the mass of the volume of water displaced is equal to the mass of the immersed object, n'est pas? Volume of water displaced = S x S/2 x L, which = S(squared)L /2 meters cubed. Mass of body = S(squared)L/2 x 1000 kg/m3. If Mass = Volume x Density, it follows that Density = Ma...

Re: SEEMP Manual for Office & Vessel
JollyJack, the EEOI that you have posted the link to is perhaps just one part of the SEEMP. This can be used to quantify the amount of GHG produced during a voyage. You can use it to find tonnes of fuel consumed per nautical mile steamed, grammes of CO2 produced per nautical mile steamed, tonnes of ...

Re: Merry Christmas
I'd like to wish a Merry Christmas to all ashore and asea. I'm at sea myself this year, and Christmas in Brazil is not the same as home, but there it is. It is hard to get in to the spirit of the season, but we have to be thankful for what we have, as there are definitely those far worse off than we...

Re: Astern Dammit!!
JK, I thought it was the Irving Ours Polaire that took out the dock in Curling??? I worked on the Nordic a few times when she was the Wellington Kent. There were no more crankcase explosions while I was there, but more than a few times you would find a fuel pump with its holding down bolts sheared o...

Re: Oil Fired Boiler Burners
How old are you lot at all?? Just kidding, love to hear about the older technology. Sometimes think I was born 50 years or more too late. I'll hazard a guess about only using one furnace in a Scotch boiler though. Would it have to do with evening (?) out the heat stresses in the unit? Perhaps the un...

Re: That's a lot of hits
I really should read what I am typing. We only have 2 steering gear units, and a general service air compressor. As to the mates taking care of ballast, that's always been the case on the tankers I've worked on, which is all I've worked on actually. They can have it for me. And to the clerk issue, a...

Re: That's a lot of hits
Here goes nothing, JK!! At present, we are hanging off the back of an FPSO off the coast of Brazil, taking the 1st parcel of a 2 part load. In case you were wondering, I am working on a shuttle tanker. I am Chief Engineer here now, but that position is fast moving into a glorified clerk's position, ...

Re: That's a lot of hits
OK, I admit that I spend more time on here as a 'ghost' reading the forum than actually writing in it, but I figure if I don't have anything to contribute, or my thoughts have already been articulated, leave well enough alone. I don't spend that much time on here, usually while in the ECR on DP watc...

Amen, JK, I'm glad to be clear of it as well. Took me 3 tries to get it, but the first 2 were only half-hearted affairs, mostly to satisfy a chief I was sailing with. Fortunately, I managed to squeeze some education leave from my company in order to finish the remainder of my certificate( in return ...

Re: firing diesel oil with atomising steam
Just as an aside; earlier this year, I went to the boiler manufacturer (Mitsubishi) to see if they had sprayer tips with smaller holes for use with LSMDO/MGO. The sprayers we have in service now could pass coal through them! The quote that came back included parts for the atomizers, sprayers, limit ...

Alfa-Laval CIP system.
Does anyone out in the Dieselduck world have any real experience with the Alfa-Laval Cleaning-in-Place system? We have a couple of units onboard since new (2000) and now the company is asking us to put them in service. I had planned on rigging one of them up to clean tube heaters, but never got arou...

Re: firing diesel oil with atomising steam
I don't think it is a question that you shouldn't fire diesel oil in a boiler with atomizing steam, but rather, why would you? The whole idea of the steam atomizing is to break up, atomize as it were, the incoming fuel droplets for better ignition of the boiler's normal heavy fuel oil. With diesel o...

Re: LT Pressure
I suspect that I work on the same class of ship, though Ryan's name is not familiar to me. If so, these ships have a central cooling system, 2 actually, Port and Starboard. The LT coolers are cooled by sea water, and the LT system is used to cool the remainder of the engine room equipment, including...
