Re: Hours of Work and Rest-Home truths on recording practices By Michael Grey
When it comes to the "Safe" Minimum Manning Regulations. The biggest loophole that vessel owners love is that, in some cases, it takes the addition of a single crewmember to meet the requirement for cargo and maintenance operations by the crew. I know the vessel owners would fight it tooth...

Could be an early Fairbanks as well. Fairbanks built a flat head diesel around the time of WW2 prior to switching to the lighter weight and higher HP opposed piston engine

Re: Windlass not taking load on my ship, ideas to fix it
It's possible that the problem is not with the hydraulic system at all. The problem could be in the torque limiting coupling, if fitted between the drive motor and the windlass gearbox. I've experienced issues with the torque limiting coupling on electric motor driven windlasses that would slip prem...

Re: First Timer
Maybe it's a modern duel fuel engine Diesel & LNG
It's my understanding with duel electronic fuel injection systems the engine can work as a diesel or operate on LNG but despite the higher compression a spark plug is still required to ignite the LNG

Re: ER noise level
It's not only the enginerooms are noisy I've been on Self Unloading Bulk Carriers that when the Unloading Gear was running the Noise level was higher in the cabins than the Engineroom. So for some crew there was no escaping noise in excess of 90 DB

Re: Dirty/brown/orange colour cooling water
I know this may be out there but has it been determined that the corrosion is not being generated by electrolysis? Was the alternator overhauled at the same time? If so were the ground straps for the alternator and the engine properly reconnected and any sacrificial anodes in the cooling system repl...

Re: Engine cannot start
After reading what has already been written sounds like you may have a fuel supply pressure/restriction problem I'd check the drive and the relief valve on the fuel oil booster pump, if engine driven, to insure it hasn't failed or the relief valve has stuck open I'd also check that if there is a fue...

Re: Chief Engineer Steve Elrick
It saddens me as I read of Steve's passing
Steve and I were both young Chief Engineer's with Algoma in the late 80's and early 90's before he moved on to bigger and better things.

As usual management skates away with a brief nod towards lack of training from TSB. This should have been found during the sea tr...
