Re: CARRYOVER OF FUEL OIL TO CASCADE TANK AND BOILER

What type of boiler is it, water or fire tube because depending on the configuration it may require a major overhaul of the boiler to get all the residual fuel out of the boiler. The reason I asked is that I experienced a situation where blended fuel and diesel had made it's way into a vertical fire...

Re: STERN TUBE HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING MANEUVERING

I have sailed on a couple of ships where it was a design requirement to keep the aft peak partially ballasted to provide Stern Tube Cooling, and this requirement was firmly stated in the stability Booklet for use by the Deck Officers in stability calculation. As a practical measure to ensure suffic...

Re: STERN TUBE HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING MANEUVERING

I've seen this issue on some vessels, especially those with CP Props where the HP Servo oil is fed through the shaft to the hub. Depending on CP system, part of the cooling of the CP Servo oil is sometimes dependent on the transfer of heat generated while maneuvering from the shaft to the sterntube ...

Re: Sewage Discharge Requirements for a Canadian Flagged vessel entering US Waters

The USCG will have the most up to date information as where the dumping of treated waste water and waster water holding tanks is permitted. Many of the most recent up to date electronic charts have overlays indicating the zones where waste water must be held and holding tanks can be dumped within th...

Re: SMS, the Holy Grail?

There's more to this than just SMS it's the mindset of the management types that has taken over the decision making process and do not have a clear view of the "Big Picture". I'm sure most of us can remember what it was like before the magic boxes that collects and spews tons of sometimes ...

Re: Transport Canada issues

Well what do you expect! T/C inspectors are now in a "Dead End" job and they know it. Time was that the primary roll of the T/C inspector was to conduct certification examinations, conduct regular inspections of machinery & hulls, conduct annual safety and port state inspections, carry...

Re: Engine Room Resource management course

I agree with Big Pete's recommendation with respect to the Engine room Resource Management course to go to your local T/C office and ask where to get the course or if it is still needed. You may however not be able to get an answer considering T/C is reviewing the certification process after suspend...

Re: ME instructor, MI MUN, NFL

If memory serves me correctly but when CPF's were being built in Saint John wasn't there a joint Bachelor's "Marine Engineering" or a "Marine" specialized Mechanical Engineering Degree program that is/was set up between the Mun and Saint John Campus of UNB Engineering Departments...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

A few years ago, after talking to and lending my Marine Steam Engineering books to an engineer who worked at Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant. He wanted to borrow the books because the Marine Engineering Books were the best reference books for the Power Engineering exams. I looked into challenging at lea...
