Re: Permanent Foreign Seafarer Entry into Canada

I've had a First Class Ticket for almost 10 years. Those will be worthless soon, as all graduates of the 4 year programs will get the new "Chief Engineer" license almost automatically after accumulating a bit of sea time. Seriously; anyone who makes a living working on a Canadian ship shou...

Permanent Foreign Seafarer Entry into Canada

Does anyone know where I can get more information on the agenda items below from the November CMAC meeting in Ottawa? I'm under the impression that foreign crews will be able to work in Canada, in the near future, with almost no barriers to entry. What will protect our jobs? SEAFARER SHORTAGE • Stre...

Re: Marine Chief Engineer

Oceanex may have the best onboard conditions and leave system in Canada. It`s 28 days on/off, like clockwork and not much turnover when compared to most companies. Lot`s of really talented Engineers working there. I only have good things to say about these guys.

Chain Fall Certification

I have been on ships where the Engineers inspect and test the chain blocks onboard using a calibrated load cell, others send them ashore for this work. How can I get an onboard testing/inspection system going on my vessel. I can't find any regulations that aren't vague. Can someone point me in the r...

Re: wages

I'd say that scale is correct.

110,000/185 = 590

That's what most permanent 2/E's seem to be doing............

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

What's the point of licenses if you don't have to earn them. Are you seriously implying that the only separation between the lowest and highest license be 36 months sea time? That's ridiculous.

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

We are not Doctors.

Why not just memorize the material, write the exams and get the license? In any case, it's better to have it.

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

The only reason a TC 1st or 2nd Class License has any value is because they are relatively difficult to obtain. Presently, if you want to succeed in this system all you have to do is write a few exams and it is very likely you will have a good high paying job. Once the new policy of "free licen...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

I took time off to get my 1st Class. I spent slot of my savings and "put my family in jeopardy". It paid off, big raise and better working conditions, also more opportunity ashore. I agree with pretty much everything Revolver has said and can't understand why more people don't stop being l...

Re: Doom and Gloom

I wonder what the standards are for certification in, say, The UK and Norway? Are the they similar to what we are facing here? I can't imagine that Norway would have "give away tickets". I've been trying to look it up but its all in Norwegian!

Re: Suicide and sea

Do you think the new licensing will put me out of a job? Or simply make it not worth sailing anymore? What other Countries have similar licensing schemes to the one we have just brought in?

Re: Doom and Gloom

But it does get you the equivalent of a 3rd/4th class license and enables you to stand a watch after only two years of study. So, we will literally have teenagers all alone in the engine room of large ships. That does not seem right to me.
