Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year

These CAT engines can tolerate little to no water at all with such tight tolerances in order to get the injection pressures to meet current emmision reguilations. I have had that wonderful experience before.

Road Diesel in BC is low sulphur adn weighs in a B5 or a mere 5% bio-diesel.

Re: Main Engine High Exhaust Temperatures

You donot say what kind of propulsion system you have. Did you perform any work to the propulsion shafting and propellers? Change props/Pitch, tailshaft bearings etc...If the bearings are tight or to poor fit, and or poor manufacturer they may swell or result in higher exhaust gas temps. Also if you...

Re: ...and how is your morning?

Martin,

You may have dodged a bullet with the block, but I doubt you will be successful with the crank.

Crankshaft may be twisted, and hence damaged beyond repair.

Been there done that too.....

Re: Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) - ship's Fuel For the Future?

Primarily I am wondering about: - the bunkering process, how does that work, from a truck delivery to the ship, or from a tank ashore? What kind of procedure is required? Safety? How long? -the ap...

Re: Watertight doors - the eternal debate

Te eternal debate is an interesting topic..... Lets face it, there are two fundamental principles which guarantee safe passage through a power-operated watertight door, irrespective of the operating mechanism and operational mode.......1) Always open the door fully before passing through, and 2) Nev...

Re: Main Bearing Check

I have always inspected the Thrust Bearing, to get as much information as possible with one bearing.......Not always a pretty site, but usually an indication of a few things in the history of the machine.....

Re: exhaust gases bellows problem

I had a problem once where there was an additional component that was like a "top hat" that went internal in the exhaust bellows to control the tubulence of the gas flow. It was only attached at the hot end, and smoothed the flow of exhaust gas out... It was left out by the previous crew, ...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio

The hole in the hull where the piece of the uncharted rock has moved to, appears to be into the machinery compartment.

Do we know if any of the souls that still remain missing are engineering personnel?

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio

Sandbar?....There is a piece of "rock" the size of a truck embedded in the hull? Apparently no 'Mayday" call until the evacuation was well underway...........

Amazing that there were not more people missing or dead.
