Re: ERR for BC Ferries in Tsawassen
Yes, figuring things or for yourself is my sentiments exactly when it comes to the workings on the ship. But then it gets toward emergency situations, plans, thought process, actions and reactions. If someone starts sweating and shaking trying to answer what they'd do in a fire, what would they actu...

Re: ERR for BC Ferries in Tsawassen
An engine's an engine's an engine. The more your mind opens to machinery the smaller it seems to get, so while machinery can be vastly different if you break it down to basic principals of mechanics, physics, thermodynamics, and electrotechnology the fundamental workings of any machine should be abl...

Does it have something to do with the issues you had, or did it just cross your mind after witnessing their trouble shooting process?

I hate those kinds of ads.The Dieselduck wrote:future openings
No actual opening, just add to the long list of people who've already applied.
They only have 7 ships, and they are well crewed.

Re: NFLanders only - TC 3rd Class for Offshore
There is not a lot of work in Newfoundland right now. There's scatter contract jobs. This job is scheduled to only be 60 days. The previous Reliance job, which was filled by a NLer, was scheduled to only be 3 weeks (and is finished now). Small contract jobs, RARELY anything permanent. Oil is down, s...

Re: Alfa Laval MAPX313 Purification setup
Flash point for L.O in a purifier isn't the issue with higher temps, like JJ said the flash point is well higher than the purifier setting there. But I understand 'cooking' the oil too high can result in reduced lubricating properties; basically burning it Also at the higher temp the oil can also co...

Re: Alfa Laval MAPX313 Purification setup
A couple of these answers should be in the manual. I would say bump the temp a few Deg C for sure, 85 or so should be okay for lube oil. I don't think cold water should be a problem. The book should have a nice diagram-chart that will show the S.G of the separated fluid and the Dia of the Gravity Di...

Re: Writing Third Class exams
3rds EKG and Motor are simple and straight forward. If you know Reeds General and Motor books it's no problem. I had less sketching than expected, but they were very straight fwd questions. As for calculation exams, I have no experience in a TC setting. I know that I would be inclined to answer any ...

Look, you don't go buy from Wal Mart when you want quality goods - same thing here. The vessels just don't have the same feeling of 'strength' and quality of machinery. You can look at some pieces and you think for a second "...is that made out of plastic or what?". Their Hulls are now com...

I did the MED D Course with a number of deck officers who work with Woodwards - and they had a good few example stories of safety and emergency management heh

This is a great write up Dieselduck, very reasonable and informative coming from a long time working marine engineer and someone who, as you said, has his finger on the pulse of our industry. Let us know what comes of it, and if you have any other ideas in which more people may provide additional su...

As part of the Canada-Newfoundland Atlantic Accord Implementation Act, first consideration for employment will be given to qualified persons who meet the residency requirements of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This goes for all offshore oil related jobs in NL. From my supply experience ...

I don't think they have any actual openings, they have had that posing on their site for months now - just taking in resumes, no actual movements from what I heard. We are currently accepting resumes for any future openings
