Re: Navy and Biofuel

I sailed with a gas turbine in 1963 as emergency generator, that was first of many. It was an internal combustion engine complete with combustion chamber compressor and turbine. It burned gas oil and was open cycle. I am told there was internal combustion gas turbines running on the Brayton (closed)...

Re: Another Carnival Triumph

The latest is that the vessel is developing a list. Passengers have to walk sideways to cross the deck. I wonder if they can pump the bilges. Very worrying for passengers and relatives.

Re: Lifeboat Accident

Pete has hit it, there is not a sign of a back up boat three seamen swimming in the water and five under the boat. An absolute disgrace. I was a surveyor and I have put hundreds of boats in the water for testing. I checked the boat and the hooks before lowering along with the Mate and Senior Enginee...

Re: Lifeboat Accident

I understand the boat had been in the water and was being recovered at the time of the accident. This type of boat requires careful cocking of the on load hooks and expertise to ensure this cocking before retrieval, The firing of the hooks is by cable Bowden or Morse, this age of ship I am unsure wh...

Lifeboat Accident

I do see an accident with a lifeboat on the Thompson cruise ship Majesty causing five deaths and some injuries. It happened in the Canaries, at Santa Cruz de Palma. It seems all crew members. It does not seem any passengers involved. News just coming through now, lifeboats are dangerous pieces of eq...

Re: BC Ferry suffers a random event

This vessel has diesel electric drive, 4 off MaK 8m32c, driving alternators to two motors driving shafts at 140 rpm to two CP props. The motors are constant speed and any faults on pitch control leave the shafts driving at 140 rpm with the faulty control. I have worked with this system, it is a poor...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio

I just watched a number of pics of the disaster and a large number of inflatable liferafts were seen floating in their containers, they had not inflated. I would think there was some escape system for these, not used. Looking at the pics an absolute shambles.

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year

I have just checked the diesel pump where I fill my car and it is 2.5% bio and is an ESSO pump. I am told in some supermarket it is up to 7% bio. This is the limit for a large number of cars and voids the warranty. I have just checked my wee weather station and it is 14 degC at the moment. Clear and...

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year

I dont know what is going on in BC but if you blend No1 and No2 diesel the additives used in the normal blend are not suitable for biodiesel. In blended diesel with biodiesel you need different additives. My Shogun runs on blended diesel with biodiesel, no problems. What worries me is the hull of th...

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year

We are now seeing the Kulluk has finally run aground, I wonder how they are going to get the blame for that on to BP. Oh, I am so sorry it maybe Shell. Of course nothing to do with the GovUSA.
The US Coastgaurd could not pull their way out of a papar bag.

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year

I worked on the Cat 3612 the old numbering and they run on MDO. I cant be sure they are the same as these engines, but very similar. You have got to watch up there you get the proper grade of winter diesel. Its specially blended. They dont like sodium either ie salt water in the bunkers, the dissolv...

Re: Sail to Steam

The centre of schooner building in Canada was Lunenburg in Nova Scotia. At that they built schooners all round NS. I note the three buildings on the jetty are not houses, probably warehouses. The town houses have chimneys and stacks. The warehouses are very dark. Maybe smoke houses or timber drying....

Re: P.Eng after 1st Class?

Canada is on the STCW white list and accepts all other white list countries certificates as it accepts its own. The UK accepts all certificates on the white list as it accepts its own. Canada as well as the UK has accepted that Panama and other certificates are exactly the same as its own. Google ST...

Re: P.Eng after 1st Class?

I used to be on the Scottish Branch Committee of the IMarEST and I asked a member what the situation was regarding the qualification CMarEng, ie Chartered Marine Engineer. He says brought in recently and awarded and registered by IMarEST under a section of the rules called, Assessment of Applicants ...

Re: P.Eng after 1st Class?

In the UK the Legal definition is Chartered Engineer (CEng) and registration with the engineering council. The letters CEng and others are protected by law. The academic requirement for CEng is at Masters Degree level. Bachelors Degree and Bachelors Degree Honours are not now sufficient. I am a memb...
