Re: Ship's Electrician qualifications....

This is another example of the never ending conflict of regulations between the Federal & Provincial governments with respect to qualification requirements for tradesmen such as electricians. It is my understanding that where ships are federally regulated, provincial trade/labour rules and regul...

Re: MAPX 204 separator

I would first check your piping to insure all the pipes are fitted correctly. From the picture there seems to be some errors there and it looks like the feed pump mounted on the front end of the purifier isn't even connected. It also looks like that you are using a common pressurized water supply fo...

Another fine engineer has answered the telegraph for the last time.
Fred took a chance on hiring me as a rookie 2nd engineer in 1980 on the factory freezer trawler Gadus Atlantica

I wonder if the enzyme will work on Zebra Mussels as effectively. If so big water consumers on the Great Lakes and other parts of the world along with ships will beat a path to their door.

Re: Exhaust valve tappet clearance

I can see no advantage in increasing the valve clearance unless the manufacturer has changed the design of the valve and it is necessary to increase the valve clearance to compensate for thermal expansion of the valve spindle. If this is not the case you will end up changing the valve timing causing...

Re: summertime lull

Good Luck Brad 1st Class General has got to be the toughest exam you will ever write, even your orals can sometimes be a breeze by comparison. For some of us the summertime lull can be very short lived, just get the paint brush, lawn mower and other tools out to start chiseling away at the dreaded &...

Re: Electrical stuff

The 4th item you have to verify before connecting to shore is the proper phase sequence. If the vessel is not fitted any sort phase sequence indicator it is permissible to go on shore power temporarily and run a 3 phase motor long enough to verify proper rotation If at all possible you avoid operati...

If the breaker is a main breaker for a generator you should do the following. If the breaker is electrically controlled from a remote position or an automatic control system switch the breaker to manual control and try tripping the breaker with electrical control system or the mechanical trip on the...

Re: Electrical stuff

There are usually many ways to isolate motor so it can be safely disconnected besides opening the breaker in the main panel. At the Motor Starter there may be a secondary breaker, disconnect switch or fuses. Opening the breaker or disconnect or pulling the fuses will isolate the power source. The br...

Re: Project Horizon Seafarer fatigue

I can't help but think that boredom is also a contributing factor to a high level of fatigue. Today's ships are very highly automated pieces of machinery that leaves little for the watchkeeper to do other than look out the window or watch a bunch of numbers change on a computer screen. It is well do...

Re: Heavy pipe knocking issue

Sounds like there is a problem venting the pipe and with the condensate in the pipe so warn it will flash off into steam with the reduction of the pressure and cause a water hammer in the pipe. I can not be certain but I expect the discharge pipe is submerged in water inside the feed tank in order t...

Re: Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) - ship's Fuel For the Future?

Duel Fuel or Natural Gas only Fairbanks Morse O/P engines have been used in the natural gas fields for years as pump engines and the diesel version has been used as both propulsion and generator engines on ships for years. In fact the Fairbanks instruction and parts manuals had maintenance and parts...

Re: Generator load sharing issue

Mechanical Governors such as the Woodard UG8 with dirty or different viscosity oils, having too little or mismatched droop settings, or the load compensation incorrectly set to compensate for engine operating condition and matched between the governors will cause similar issues. This issues will cau...
