Tech Tip - Cat Fines/Separators
There have been many instances of damage to fuel injection equipment with resultant blame placed on the fuel. One must remember that fuels though meeting ISO specifications of 80 ppm or less may still be problematic if the abrasive particles are small <10 micron Then Stokes Law V = gd²(ρs-ρ)/18µ app...

New LNG Problems
Has anyone been involved with a new LNG delivery? Seems you can't pick up an issue of Tradewinds without finding a story regarding problems with containment systems/insulation. Latest involved BP new builds. I believe the yards in both Korea and China are cranking these ships out far to quickly with...

Perhaps Martin can shed some light on this. Does Bermuda have an actual sulfur limit of 2% or is this some voluntary agreement such as the one recently announced by Chevron?

Cruise West
Seems Cruise West has a lot of navigational problems with another grounding in Alaska. There have been many reports of labor problems there since they took over the old American Hawaii paddlewheel vessels. Government should take a heavy hand in an vessel casusalty especially in the case of passenger...

ECA for Canada
Has there been any news about Canada moving forward with Emissions Control Areas? Lakes? BC area? US is limping towards ratification of MARPOL Annex VI and California has new legislation ready to roll to tighten further their former MGO/MDO requirements. Scrubbers have been deemed to be limited to p...

US as well
Age discrimination is rampant here in the US as well. Most companies here these days would rather take on a younger person and overlook the experience and credentials of an older person.

Large Plant
Just got back from a trip to one of the largest diesel power plants located in Honduras. When we look at marine plants and consider one large this plant was 300Mw 14 x 18V48/60 MAN and 5 x 18PC2V Pielstick plus one 12Mw waste heat steam turbine. Had to tip my hat to these people. 13 HFO separators a...

Have to keep size in perspective as well as speed. These ships are doing 25 knots using over 100K horsepower. To make the same speed on some of the designs on the board under study would take almost twice the horsepower. Just heard yesterday that there is a concept design coming down the pike for a ...

Maersk is a top notch outfit engineering wise, they turned a few of the old US flag SeaLand (ECON) vessels around that were Korean built and a disaster from the day of delivery. When you are burning in excess of 250 tons a day with today's prices it has to be quite serious to consider such actions. ...

Slow Speed Steaming
Just read in Trade Winds where Maersk may be considering slowing down to as litle as 11 knots on some of their new jumbos. Really a shame when you see the strides made to reach the power output required for those ships. This will be a real test for the B&W ME and Wartsila FLEX engines to see if ...
