Re: Lloyds List wants you stories

Does that include stories of Lloyds surveyors, brown envelopes, cartons of Marlborough, bottles of Johnny Walker and all statutory IMO and SOLAS safety Certificates signed on the same day on one afternoon visit?

Re: test questions

Pete, to clarify that, if you steamed 200 miles, but revs x prop pitch indicates 300 miles, the formula is distance steamed (200) divided by distance indicated (300) or 200/300 = 0.666, which means the prop is doing 66% work. Therefore, the slip is 33%. Theoretical distance and actual distance are n...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

I have erred in interpretation of the SVMO exams. If a candidate is challenging the SVMO-R, he or she must write the SVMO-General and take an oral exam on the vessel for which he is being examined. He does not have to take the Oral referred to in table item 3(b)(i) . I advise people to RTFQ, perhaps...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

whales, the SVMO is permitted for a passenger vessel with propulsive power between 75 and 749 Kw, on a limited Near Coastal 2 or a sheltered waters voyage. This is specified in the table in the Marine Personnel Regulations, section 219, which can be viewed here: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/SOR-200...

2/M Orals in Aberdeen, many moons ago, the examiner said to me "This is an examination on everything you know about Engineering. Well, what do you know?" The same is true now, the Orals scope is defined in TP 2293, which you can see here: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp-tp2293-chap...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

To dump the project now, Brian, would be a loss to the industry and a sad comment on private operators. Industry's perception is that if a guy has to hold a Certificate of Competence, he'll want more money, and that is anathema to Industry, whose only objective is to increase profits. If, by doing s...

I'm not making any judgemental calls Brian, merely posting the Regulations. If you're "wearing the Flag", (and patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, according to Ben Franklin) you might like to know that I, too, have proudly worn the uniform of HM and continued in uniform in the ...

MED courses compliant with STCW VI/1, VI/2 and VI/3 are now acceptable in Canada. This means a course taken in Manila or Bangkok is valid on a Canadian ship.
