Re: Fault Finding

I'm more familiar with Alfa Laval purifiers, but one thing I would have checked is the amount of operating water actually making it to the purifier. There are usually specifications for required amount of flow. Also, if it was working before the routine overhaul/cleaning, then I would take the purif...

Re: Seafarer Medical and Marine First Aid

If anyone has an expiring Marine Advanced First Aid Class, good luck finding a place to take it. St. Johns Ambulance won't be offering the course for a while due to a lack of instructors... I've been trying to track down some clear regulations to see if I need to actually take the course right now. ...

Re: Seafarer Medical and Marine First Aid

Just had a look on St. John's website and the Marine Advanced First Aid course is now 40 hours. What a great way to spend some time at home, doing courses.

Class Required Spares

I'm currently working on a new build and the contract specs state the yard will provide all class required spares. I've been trying to find a list of ABS required spares, but from my research I have not found a complete list but instead bits and pieces scattered through some of the rules. So far I h...

SW in Diesel Tanks

This might be a no-brainer, but I might as well ask. How well does a centrifugal seperator cope with removing salt from diesel fuel? Are the salts and minerals found in in sea water denser than the diesel therefore being easily removed during seperation or will some of the salts remain dissolbed in ...

Re: How to explain hydrolock in a diesel engine?

That's what I also thought, Sébastien. However, on every vessel I have so far sailed on it has never been a routine practice to actually turn the engine over using the turning gear before starting it. Blowing through the engine was the norm. However, most of my sailing has been with multi-engine arr...

Re: How to explain hydrolock in a diesel engine?

Anyone ever have this happen to them onboard? Is the indicator cock enough of a port to allow whatever fluid (fuel or water) trapped inside your cylinder to escape before it does any serious damage?

Hi Martin, Things are going well. More decks being cut out, more shell plating going as well. As for some details regarding the switchboard question, the vessel is Lloyds, just over 500GT. The switchboard manufcturer is dealing with the Lloyds approval process. Its one of my queries to them so we wi...

SWBD Fire Shutdowns

We are currently drawing up the specs for a new swbd. The vessel has cpp hydraulics as well as the hydraulic packs for the steering gear inside the ER. Any comments regarding if this equipment should be included on the fire stop rail? On the one side we are dealing with hydraulic oil and hoses which...
