Re: Engineers for CCG
They do that banasa, and hire graduates of the CCG college on a temporary/casual basis. Engineers off the street haven't been painted the appropriate colour, so are generally ignored, in my experience.

Re: Marine Steam Engineer, Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre
I've sailed on a triple expansion up and downer (similar to the one on the Sandpebble) with an oil fired Scotch boiler (yes, I know what a Weirs Kinetiker is!) but never a coal fired one, that would need a gang of Paddies to keep going!

Re: Tanker aground in NS
TC did what it's supposed to do when the vessel was in Quebec, she was restricted until the relevant repairs were made to make her seaworthy and personnel were changed to suit. Once Class gave it the OK, she's off, nothing to do about it. That changes were make and the C/E became the Master, only Cl...

Re: Emergency/Direct Bilge Suctions
It is not an offence to discharge oily water in an emergency. If the bilge flooded after grounding, or the Old Man playing bumper boats, that big red handwheel which operates the emergency bilge valve is opened toot sweet, Chief or Captain notwithstanding. I'd rather apologise than swim out of a flo...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
I would suggest you look at the Academic requirements for 3rd Class in TP 2293. There is no syllabus as yet for NAR at 3rd and 4th level, so I suggest winnowing out the basic stuff for 2nd Class NAR.

Re: Information about STCW courses
Any training done outside Canada regarding MED, PPS or other required training is recognized by Canada, if it is compliant with STCW standards and carried out on an approved course by an Institution approved by an STCW flag state. The flag state must approve the Institution teaching the course, and ...

Re: Class 4 motor exam
Since November, 2017, things have changed. To get a 4th class now, you need a bit more than just EKG and EKM. This is an extract from ship safety bulletin 09/2017, laying out the requirements for 4M. 4. To obtain a Fourth-Class Engineer, motor ship or steamship CoC (STCW), a person must: 4.1 Meet al...

Re: SMS, the Holy Grail?
Seafarers have always been, are now and always will be disposable. That's why, when a tanker with 23 crew aboard catches fire and sinks, you hear about oiled birds and oil in the water, but not the seafarers who are missing. That's why the most junior office girl or boy has more clout with office ty...
