I talked to our DPA about drugs and drug testing. I was surprised at what he told me. In Canada, a persons privacy does not allow for drug testing. If the company's drug policy states they will provide some sort of rehab, then that is all is required. It all sounded rather wishy-washy to me. It is h...

My heavens, was he asked that? It is a pump run off the old steam recip engines crossheads. They are designed to to handle air and condensate from a condensor. I've seen one 25 years ago in a museum. oh God, I just realized it is more like 28 years  Here is a little: http://homepage.ntlworld....

LOL on the engines.
They are on a vessel life extension program here. But....the way the funding is running, I don't know how anyone can expect us to procur parts and machinery one year and do the work the following. T'ain't going to happen.

I was just sent an email that says 5 weeks delivery on a firm order for MaK heads. The local company suggests adding another 3 weeks. I checked up on the crankshaft issues and it is about the same length of time for delivery. Thanks for the heads up on that one, ArkSeaJumper. When I did some checkin...

That is interesting, because I was told that a big company out there was bringing engineers in from India because of the shortages.
Just think the power a company would hold over that individual if that is the case !!

I guess with the stern firmly anchored, the ship wasn't drifting far :) A definite "Oh shite" moment though! I've been on two ships that the Captain forgot about the CPP one direction rotation: We had a ship stop in moving ice, the Captain was told by the Ice Captain not to de-clutch. Not ...

Oh that is MUCH better then anything I could come up with!
Now, did the Captain immediately throw the prop astern, only to remember belatedly that it is CPP?

Are companies willing to switch to MOD FO to get the length of time between overhauls though? I try to discourage engine work on dock. Weird things occur, I've seen an engine room filled with sand after a yard worker blasted into an open seachest that also had all the valves off in the engineroom. T...

I would think given the length of time to design and getting government funding to build a warship, that the elcetronics package could be completely out of date by the time the ship is launched. Or is it upgraded during the building process?

Yes, there is more and more instance of seaman being villianized. It is to the point I am not fussy about signing for anything after an acquittance was on the stand after the Norway boiler explosions. He had signed off the inspection for the boilers when he worked for the the shipping company two ye...
