Re: Schottky diode

It has a low forward voltage drop, forward being the key word here.

Re: New engine

Now here's a good one for Andrew, even with his complex advanced jaw dropping design department which a lot of us mere mortals out here are in awe of and struggle to understand. The challenge for 2021? How to fit a set of wheelbearings into a Marine Engine without really trying. Parellel, taper, bal...

Second on the right?
Am I correct?
When you were younger?
PS
Keep that old bearing scraper radii sharp ( two of ) world's turning upside down over here in U.K. Maybe back to square one and the beginning of it all.

Happy Xmas

Re: Replacing Healy Prop Motor

Interesting article, why are the blades seemingly reduced in diameter and wider width wise? Is this a common design factor with ice breakers? Stubby effect seemingly. Wonder what the total surface area of " bite " is on the pitch facings versus a normal proportioned equipoise prop? Further...

Re: New engine

Can't work out where the prop. bolts on to this? Thought the rings "rub" against the cylinder walls not the piston? Or is it a knackered engine? Crankcase compression version? Pipe on the crankcase breather discharges at the rear of the engine to provide much needed thrust? Dynamo? Could t...

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates

It would appear to me that owing to the lack of replies out there that the modern day marine engineer would be perhaps be spending more time in the control room nowadays than out on the job in the engine room and as such lack of practicalities seem to be a sad result of this. The taking of leads for...

Re: New engine

Hi Andrew/Felix, With further reference to a certified photograph of your spare engine and your comments " one person 100 kg 1 metre up and down gives 1 kw each time " cannot be applied to the spare engine depicted by me July 18 last for the following reasons listed thus; This spare engine...

Re: LO consumption high Wartsila 46 Engine

Further to BP's comments re ring/liner contacts I well remember in the mid seventies the advent of chromed liners. Chromard was the trade name. The chromed liners being much harder than close grain cast iron liners rapidly accelerated ring wear. Plus of course no graphite being present in chrome lin...

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates

Cartridge ones won't fit in the oil clearance gap to be measured but the older type ones which do exactly the same job will.
You could say it's just a phase you are going through.

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates

Some would say that retirement is akin to a high revving engine consistently under load suddenly and abruptly shut down to tick over possibly creating localized overheat problems etc and rendering the whole plant to happenings never experienced before. Similarly effecting retirement by shutting down...

Re: Historic Steam Engine + Bill Gates

As no takers for this one I maybe ought to explain to perhaps the persons not familiar with solid white metal bearings in machinery that is was not allways sprayed on white metal onto copper backed steel shells in mains / bigends / camshaft etc bearings but in older marine steam engines ( and turbin...
