Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

I don't want to be a prick, but I also don't want to dumb down what we do. We deal with the physical sciences. Just because you can turn a wrench doesn't make you an engineer . When you're on watch read an exam subject for half hour every day, when you're off watch practice that subject for a half h...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

Couple months ago everyone was crying that tickets are going to be given away for free, they'll have no value, what a joke, this is the end of it all. Now they've quashed that, and actually made it more difficult to get the tickets... And... Everyone is pissed off again. (except the guys who got the...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

Lol I was thinking the same thing. It went from nothing to having to do more haha.
I will get my 1st class regardless of hurdles, but it'd just be nice to know what I'll for sure have to do when I have enough sea time lol

35 hours, so they're a week long.
Probably run about $1400-1800.
Marine institute offers leadership very rarely....

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

It means do the exams and actually earn the ticket, or fly somewhere and fullfil the Manilla regs? And that we're still at...a kind of standstill - as per TC normal operating procedure lol And as for mengineer85 - i guess they better get cracking on passing their exams. If they got their Chief ticke...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention

Ha right on, there ya go all worries solved. You gotta give us more insider info than that, though! Did they realize what a farce it was? What about people who have applied and received their new tickets, are they still valid - even though they came from a cracker Jack box? What about people who hav...

Re: What to Do ? Fire on the ship while in port.

St.John's fire department are trained for vessel fires. They make a point to specifically do the training and visit a ship a handful of times per year. That being said, they need instruction and help from ships crew as per specifics of the vessel. They are professionals. Call them. Their BAs will la...

Dang, this is a nice prospect of a spot.

Re: New Examination Process

Yip.

So why does IMO and TC hate the safety of seafarers?

I feel like once there's an inevitable incident where a inexperienced (though that's possibly subjective?) Chief kills some people, there should be a class action lawsuit.
Can that happen? Haha

Re: New Examination Process

Sure, and if I have my 3rd/4th class I haven't shown shit at the management level, so there must be hurdles in the way to go to 2nd/Chief then?

Well realistically If you can be a good second you should be able to be an ok Chief at least lol

Re: New Examination Process

I'm only a layperson not a lawyer haha

When I said section 5 I'm talking about 5 in your post:

"5. demonstrate they have the competences listed in column 1 of Table A-III/2 of the STCW Code, using the methods for demonstrating those competences set out in Section 3.1 of Annex 3"

Re: New Examination Process

So to answer your question, Mike, you don't need to write any more Exams. However, was I you, a 1M is a hellova lot better than a 2M when it comes to looking for work ashore in the future. All you have to do is Lecktech, EKs and Orals. EKG is on Monday afternoons and EKM is on Tuesday mornings. Lec...
