Re: New or reconditioned parts
The bad experience I had with the shoreside overhaul of Injectors was about 30 years ago when I was sailing with a Mirrlees "K" Major 4 stroke engine. It was not meant to reflect in any way on Mikkelsborg's company. I most strongly agree that correct adjustment of the fuel rack timing and ...

Re: New or reconditioned parts
I was on one ship before it went into drydock and I prepared a set of main engine injector nozzles for overhaul. I stripped them all down, cleaned them and removed all the gaskets and "O" rings, and tightened them together hand tight, because we had run out of gaskets and "O" rin...

Re: Engine information
With regard to the MaK engines when I sailed with one of the more recent ones I found that the 3 way cocks on the Duplex filters were unsafe compared to normal British practice. i.e I am used to the handle covering the "live" pot of the filter to make it hard too mistakenly open the pressu...

Re: New BC Law-Diesel
It is interesting that the "Law" states 5% renewables while the oil company states 5% Bio-Diesel. Here in Europe, "Renewable" includes recycled waste oil etc, which can cause it's own problems. It is very poor business practice to give you such short notice of a major change in t...

Re: OWS and drilled flanges
That is a new one on me!!!! The US Coast Guard have always been a law unto themselves. I can see that this will stop a "magic pipe" being put into the system. IT WON'T stop anyone from pumping bilges overboard using the Fire/GS pump, the direct bilge connection to the main sea water pumps ...

Re: Tips & Tricks
Welding 1)Ordering Oxygen & Acetylene During my time at Sea I have found that normally 3 cylinders of Oygen are consumed for every 2 of Acetylene, so I always aim to have this proportion in stock. 2)Correct welding procedure. I have often seen people welding something, then throwing it in a buc...

Re: sensitive sensor
Hi Pem, Welcome to the site. I think you are talking about the Wartsila NSD "SIPWA" system and the Man/ B&W " Computer Controlled Surveillance package". If I remember correctly , they use sensors embedded in the liner that sense the change in the electrical inductance as the ...

Re: The Warm Fuzzies it Ain't
What scares me is that I have recently come off a ship with all Polish Engine room crew on both "shifts" apart from myself and although they all had valid STCW certificates they thought that they could run all the machinery by "Voodoo & Black magic" none of them would read th...

Re: The Warm Fuzzies it Ain't
Sounds familiar. Make the Poachers act as Gamekeepers, employ the cheapest 3rd World Poachers/crew you can find, and then stand back and look surprised when the accidents happen. Oh Hell it's only the insurance companies money anyway, doesn't cost the airline / shipowner anything when it all blows u...

Marine Engineering - Practical Tips & Tricks
There hasn't been much activity on the site recently, so maybe we can start a new thread. Some things that I wish someone had told me, right at the beginning.... Finding the liquid level in a tank. Where a liquid tank is against the ships side it is possible to measure the liquid level by feeling th...
