Re: A couple of Shots

Nice shots I guess a love of boats and a digital camera generates many unique pictures Any idea where the Provo Wallis sister ship the Bartlett is? I served on the Bartlett as a Deck Hand in Newfoundland before I saw the light and became an Engineer. The last time I saw the vessel it was in Port Wel...

Re: Fridge Problem

There are 2 things you should check 1 Check the LP pressure switch to insure that the differential pressure setting and the pressure range is correct for the gas being used. 2 Usually there is an electric solenoid valve for each room controlled by the room thermostat in the high pressure liquid line...

Re: Engine information

What kind of info are you looking for? The Mak 6M332 engine is a simple turbo charged 4 stroke inline 6 cylinder engine. There are few things to look out for but nothing too complicated. The instruction manuals have procedures on how to carry out routine maintenance and repairs The biggest problem I...

Re: Water and oil

There are a couple of possible causes for this.
Grease forced into the water system caused by over aggressive greasing of the domestic water pump packing glands.
Oil or grease coming from pump bearings

Re: Problem solving

Was there a cross connection between the General Service or Ballast system and the Fuel System tied into the Aft Peak Line? It was a common practice to pump water into empty fuel tanks, especially double bottoms, to help improve vessel stability and reduce the risk of explosion, through such a cross...

Re: CAT Problem

Sounds like there may be a leaking Pre-combustion Chamber. This will put combustion gas into the cooling system which would lead to overheating.

Algoport Sinking

From http://www.boatnerd.com News Channel 9/7 The Algoport broke in half and sank overnight in heavy seas while under tow to China. The vessel was encountering rough seas from Tropical Storm Dujuan that had passed near the vessel's position. The tow was about one week away from its destination and t...

Re: A Little Electrical One

Was the cable to the magnetic pickup checked to insure it had enough slack to allow for engine travel as the engine rocked on the residual mounts without momentarily disconnecting from the connector plug or a loose conductor in the cable? Was the clearance on the main bearings and thrust bearing che...

Re: A Little Electrical One

I was assuming that the governor was electronic, Woodward 2301, EGCP-3 or similar with an electrical actuator over hydraulic governor
The Electronic governor would monitor both engine rpm and buss frequency and would send a signal to the actuator to maintain the off line engine at synchronous speed.

Re: A Little Electrical One

I believe the auto synchronization control for the alternator remained active and the engine was reacting, via the governor speed control, to variations in buss frequency as the load changed on the other 2 engines.

Re: Fittings and Threads

If these cocks are on a Hastie Steering Gear or a British built boiler they are most likely British Standard Pipe or Whit worth Thread. The TPI on these threads are similar to Standard Pipe and bolt threads but are cut at 55 deg as opposed to 60 deg on standard North American and Metric Threads

The Canadian SIU is affiliated with the American Union.
The Canadian Merchant Service Guild is also attempting to gain enough support to represent the "Lakes" Engineers
There are a good number engineers on the Lakes that were members of the SIU prior to becoming engineers

Re: Piston - may you rest in pieces

Looks as if there was a loss of piston cooling oil, resulting in an overheated and cracked crown which allowed oil to enter the cylinder (Note pieces missing from between the ring grooves). I experienced a similar failure on a Fairbanks Morse piston as the result of a loss of piston cooling caused b...
