Re: Sacrifical anodes

If that type of situation had happened in the old days over here and especially if the person concerned would have been a know all should the anodes concerned had been pencil anodes some wag would have turned up a set out of SS and posted them to him, a complimentary set for you to try foc . Let us ...

Re: CAT Problem

A few years ago we had in our harbour a Norwegian small freighter who, when manuevering to come alongside had a rack bar jam up and a stop control non operative either from the bridge or in the E/R. The ship steamed about half a mile up the harbour out of control hitting several fancy yachts on the ...

Re: Polar 8 Model

No, I meant thro hull fizzers, you know the ones to reduce the times that big flat bottom has to spend in the dry dock for an A/F etc. I can hear from here the tune being played on all those minuscule holes drilled in that plate welded to the ships side as the water screams thro the ( to me ) restri...

Re: TSB Releases John1 Report

And there is me over here thinking you are control room bound, bored out of your brain , sounds a bit like a reminisce job strolling around as in the old days when your pinkies were the ships engine sensors ( but not for exhaust manifolds ) and pinkies on unsheathed injector pipes measuring the puls...

Re: Polar 8 Model

Good shots of a bottom that never sees A/F? Any skin fittings on the bottom to flatten? Do you then use Fizzers over there? Large hub on the what looks like non equipoise blading, adjustable pitches maybe? Big old rudder too. Still think deep V entry is perhaps a better ride?

Re: TSB Releases John1 Report

Interesting report, human error again then. Couldn't see anywhere in the report the old mattress trick like we did on the old paddler article I wrote. Certainly slowed the flow down a lot. I remember when doing my time we lost a diver who went over the side on his own to attempt to plug a sea suctio...

Re: TSB Releases John1 Report

Something about sea suction and valve chests over there, one of our ships had to be piggybacked to UK in about 2008 owing to seawater ingress via a crew cockup job in the ice. Nearly sank. Looks like a scrapper. HMS Endurance. What a cockup!

Re: Polar 8 Model

As we say over here " overhauled with a spray gun " What with Landing craft and these Rock and Rollers I am beginning to think that in a perverse kind of way you folks over there must like skidding around on the briny? Akin perhaps to ice skating methinks.

Looks like another rock and roller to me JK. Flat bottom too, what about the bilge keels? Optional extra maybe?

Re: The age of steam

Thirty six crew? You must have been hot bunking big time here. The new giant container ships don't have that many. You sure about that? Looking at the accommodation it appears to me that you all would have been standing to attention at all times including charging your batteries overnight upright in...

Re: The age of steam

Watched your 5 part film, scary stuff especially part five, I always thought these Tupperware dishes dropped the stern door onto the beach and not stood off so far? Hope the poor old Gardener in the Foden was ok, lowdown air cleaners / water = S shaped rods? Don't envy you on those years aboard such...

Re: CAT Problem

Rod out the side jobby situation then, your CAT that ran backwards reminded me of the time when injection pumps were fitted with an anti reversing spring to prevent this happening. The old Perkins would sometimes run backwards seemingly with no damage caused. Weird seeing exhaust fumes coming out th...

Re: The age of steam

The decker looks like from this neck of the woods, an old AEC /Leyland perhaps? Nice shade of pink though. Best ashore trip of a brewery I had was in the Grenadines , super 1880 's old steam engine and even more super Rum, really nice rum made from the steam engine. What a combination indeed. And th...

Re: CAT Problem

JJ, You should have been over here when the Leyland 12 litre 510 engine came out, the headless wonder! To access the valves you had to take the crank and Pistons out, biggest load of kack ever invented engine wise. Always in major trouble crank and liner wise, there always seemed to be one in the wo...
