Where it fits

Design a ship, then maximise the cargo carrying capacity of your design, then look for an engine that fits in the small space you have left. Engineering does not dictate where an engine goes, commercial realities do.

Low all the time

Most bunker available on the Canada's east coast and upwards on the lakes have a low sulphur content. The ships in the company I work for run continuously on IFO 180 with a sulphur content ranging between 0,8% and 1,2% or HFO 380 with a sulphur content around 1,3%. For MDO they are already going tow...

Crunch time has arrived

Well it is finally here, crunch time has arrived. Now we can stop debating if it is real or if it will eventually happen or if it is just perception. It is here, right now and very palpable. Lack of licensed engineers to crew Canadian flagged ships. I must admit I was one of the skeptics who thought...

Exam questions

Welcome Maood,
Right website, wrong page. In the main menu go to the section entitled 'library' and then 'Exam questions', it's all there (thanks Martin). Might as well add it to your favorites because you'll come back often, trust me.

Equivalency

Welcome Yousef, Transport Canada evaluates all candidates on an individual basis. You will have to get familiar with TP2293E section 2.3 which you can access on the TC website. You will then have to meet a TC inspector who will check all your credentials. With regards to certification, countries are...

We have had good luck so far with our old Sabb lifeboat engines by having a specialist machine shop fabricate parts as required. In our case however, only simple parts have failed but it might still be feasible to have bearings and liners fabricated. By feasible I mean expensive but cheaper than a n...

Unfortuately for you young yorky, things all changed on the first of July last year. Last fall two of my oilers went to Transport Canada to get their study books, basically the same as an engineering cadet's book but with on the job training to compensate for the fact that they did not go to school....

Fast ferries JK. One notable example is the Victoria Clipper that runs catamarans from Washington State to Vancouver Island. Water jets are now being manufactured with powers in excess of 20 MW for civilan applications.

Thanks for the info Swailfish. Isn't it nice to see that Transport Canada is keeping up with the times? The best info I have found so far are on the websites for Rolls-Royce, Wartsila and Ultradynamics.

Thank you again JK, I was just teasing you (I knew I would get a reaction from that one). I have experienced first hand most of what you have said about spare parts held on board, one of my pet peeves is finding a damaged part in spare parts stores with the caption "used but good".

Thank you again JK. Believe it or not, my first class general examination had three out of nine questions that were letters to the company, including the one about a death in the engine room. One of the questions was justifying holding on to extra parts after receiving orders from the office to redu...
