Re: USS Indianapolis and other random USN topics
None in open waters that I can recall. I've experienced what some would refer to as a "Near Miss" in confined waters such as canals and rivers when meeting another ship. Both ships pass close enough to each other at a closing speed between 6 & 20 knots that someone could easily jump be...

Re: USN Red Over Red
Is it pervasive everywhere, putting managers in place that have no direct knowledge or no experience of the marine industry, in positions that have direct control of the marine matters? Sure there are great managers, but without that knowledge they are managing with the recommendations of others. I...

Re: Is Canadian passport essential to work in Canada?
You can work in Canada as a Landed Immigrant but companies would prefer you had a Canadian Citizenship and Passport especially if the Company regularly trade between Canada and the United States as is done on the Great lakes. Depending on the agreements the US has with the Country that issued your o...

Re: 2017 Aug - Cdn sailor on Great Lakes and St Lawrence, your input is requested
Contacted Dr. Shan and was interviewed this morning She would like to talk with anyone of any rank or position, with experience working on the Lakes on any kind of vessel. Her questions are primarily about the perception of the person being interviewed on how the rules and regulations with respect t...

Re: Common Rail Engine 48/60 cr
BP You're correct cavitation could also be a contributing factor. When I was on ships set up with a Clarifier, the primary purifier with a typical oil to water interface fed the clarifier. The clarifier while not having any kind of sealing water was effective in catching water or other contaminants ...

Re: Common Rail Engine 48/60 cr
I've been doing some searching around in an effort to see if there were similar issues in the automotive/trucking industry now that high pressure direct injection CR fuel systems are becoming more common in both diesel and gasoline engines. What I found is that indeed similar issues have occurred an...

Re: Suicide and sea
I see another Splash247 commentary article on this subject, all be it a short one, popped up on Martin's Twitter feed this morning. As usual with subjects like this there are those,in their comments poking holes in the information. Rather than poke holes or dispute the data I wish those that can do ...

Has there been any other work done on the purifier like the servicing to the systems supplying water to the purifier during the automatic process control? If so I would check the valves were assembled and functioning correctly, the coil connections are in good condition, verify that something hasn't...

Re: Mouldy Navy
You would be surprised how little a restriction in the air flow into suction of a ventilation fan would cause the fan to suck the condensate off A/C coils and sometimes out of the condensate catch tray under the coil. So on a Naval vessel designed to be operated primarily in the North Atlantic, comb...

Re: New MOHS Requirements-Asbestos
So how is it measured? What's the name of the test equipment? What qualifications required to operate same? In 1960-65 I couldn't see through the fog generated by ripsaws ripping it off all steam pipes, do these new regs mean I'm on borrowed time? In my experience "Air Sampling" in a spac...

Re: Navy Side Launch
The ship was built in Wisconsin means that the ship has to go down through the 15 locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway. So the cradle could double as underwater fendering to protect the boat from damage bouncing off the lock walls

This is increasingly becoming a conversation that is long overdue. Unfortunately, based on my own personal experiences, I don't see things changing any time soon despite the current efforts to break down the stigmas surrounding mental illness. I still suffer from effects of past experiences where I ...

Re: MEDIUM SPEED ENGINE LUB OIL
Yes you probably can but it should be a last resort move and only used to "Top Up" the existing oil charge. I would also recommend operating the 4 stroke engines on diesel fuel if they are currently set burn heavy fuel. I don't believe there will be an issue with blending of the 2 lubrican...
