The most unusual job Beam Ender

image.jpg image.jpg As I have had no luck seemingly on the two ships lifeboats, no air and Nightriding problems to date  hereby is an easier one perhaps. For me possibly the most unusual job away from the engineroom and on a ship in my entire career to date. It's Saturday night, 8 pm, ships j...

Re: Anti-Singing Tips

Blading looks different set up to me, appears from the photo to be hollow ground blades, big radius on the outside diameter plus bigger in blade width, can't see whether you can change one blade or not, can't see any eye bolts above the prop? Ever done a sea change blade?

Re: Anti-Singing Tips

That's different, looks like a 3 stage ground relief, equipoise? Three or four blader? Been looking at a Russian ship with an anzipod fitted, goes astern most of the time, weird. Yours diesel electric?

Re: Gulf Ice Video

Reminds me of an incident that happened to me back in the sixties, myself and another apprentice had done a head gasket and a propellor repair on a single screw ships lifeboat. Back in the water and we were off for sea trials. Lifting the boards by the stern gland greaser to check for leaks we noted...

Re: Gulf Ice Video

Very interesting pics and videos, so different to over here. Done some research of ships you mentioned, that tailshaft you refer to, bet for once Mr Belzona didn't score, was it coupling bolts shear or actually twisted and sheared off? I remember Q&A in the seconds exam in 1966 whereby one of th...

Re: Gulf Ice Video

How bizarre, what do you do when the headlights need adjusting at night? Looks like a mast head jobby to me, spanners in a hot water bucket as opposed to an ice bucket required for a furnace entry. You must be ahead/astern continually, hopefully bridge controlled engineroom, seems unnatural all roun...

Re: Gulf Ice Video

Just finally worked it out why you fellows love crunching through all that ice, JK gave the game away when he said how he prefers a lockup in the ice with the ship still. After much consideration and thought as to why in the world anyone could like the low temps and skidding around in a permanent wh...

Re: The most unusual job

Just memembered another use of NH3 which I haven't done since the seventies, "NITRIDING " anyone else out there done this? This was done on approx 12 litre gensets etc engines. When doing a complete engine overhaul some cranks didn't have a re grind facility of + 10 , +20 and +30 thousand ...

Re: The most unusual job

When doing my time we also used to do a lot of fishing boat/ tripping boat/ leisure boat engines and some of them had Listers/Petters fitted. With the de compressors fitted some people would shut them down by lifting the decompression levers, you could leave the boat and be on your second pint in th...

Re: The most unusual job

Remember the Listers and their running mate the Petter engines well. Taking the bumper clearances, those shims, decompression levers on both cylinders on a twin, must have been 22-1 comp. ratio. Unless you had the knack on the hand start ones they would bring you up solid like turning over a brick w...

Re: The Running of the Colours

That's slurpy fluid, ie wine, you don't keep that in your toolbox do you? This is tool you sometimes work with, and if the job goes ok then you slurp the vino collapso to celebrate.

Re: Arklow Breeze Launched

Old firm, going since 1966 apparently, green is the colour for Ireland as its Irish firm. Dear little soul, MAK for main, ( Mr Caterpillar now I see ) good job they got the C.G. Right for the launch though.
