CCGS Amundsen OOS!
I understand the CCGS Amundsen is out of service. Cracks found on 4 of the 6 main engine blocks. I found cracks on the Alco engine's on board the Laurier. These were repaired using larger gussets and gouging and rewelding. But from what I understand they are looking at re-engining the Amundsen, a ve...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
Carnival Corp.'s wrecked cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, may cost insurers as much as $800 million once employers' liability claims are paid and the vessel is removed, according to analysts at Numis Securities. The total insurance loss is likely to be between $600 million and $800 million, Nick Jo...

Re: PSM and SPSM
Yes JollyJack, everything is done in the incident of a death, always has and always will. But there are so many regs now that I bet you if you went to one TC Office and requested a definition of a reg, then go to another TC office, both definitions would be different. This reminds me of a funny ince...

Re: PSM and SPSM
You know JollyJack, you might have something there. I think all these ridiculous endorsements and certificates are due to some mate who failed and then got a job in Ottawa and is now forcing the issue on all of us Engineers!

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
Yes, I never read anything on the pod propulsion either, but thought it still might be pods. Initial hit onto rocks caused catastrophic flooding into propulsion motor room, which resulted in initial blackout due to all power used to drive vessel. EOW now faced with multitude of orders and scenarios....

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
I would agree as well, the whole Bridge as a team failed, but this still may have been because of how this Captain ran the vessel. Arrogance is a strong aphrodesiac for many a person in charge and that attitude can contribute to the saying, "My way or the Highway". Most junior mates are pa...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
I agree with you JK to an extent. But perhaps the company did not know of these course changes and subsequent closer and closer flybys? I know in my experience where the decisions by 1 person in the fleet did not necessarily mean the Office knew of this decision also. I was involved in the dismissal...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
I understand why the classification societies are concerned about the ramifications this tragic event will put on them. But we must all be sensible here and keep logic in the forefront. The classification of any vessel is all well and good but if the IMS procedures are not followed, especially after...

Re: Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio
I am sure this Captain is not superman, but this one is certainly a sham! An embarassment and so undignified, just listen to him speak and try to justify what he did was safe!!!! He is a complete fool. This should give you some idea of what he did NOT do. http://gcaptain.com/former-cruise-line-safet...
