Environment

DD, Thanks for the info. It makes interesting reading, but I think the underlying statement is that it saves them having to deal with gallons of waste oil, labour costs - mechanics to change it - and on the road down time. Very little of what was said relates to machinery monitoring. With the lower ...

Cummins

TxMarEng, Thanks. I have found my Javascript is playing up, and half the page does not come up, but I found the newsletter. As you correctly point out, Cummins have a good chunk of the OSV market.............not quite sure where though, I have never sailed with them, and only know of 1 of our vessel...

Teaching

TxMarEng, I think that teaching our younger breatheren is a great idea. Although, we may have no formal education teaching qualifications, I think many younger engineers fail to recognise, that one day they will be in our positions..............C/E or Super...............without having learn't very ...

Burn that oil !!

TxMarEng, Thanks for the info. I have been - several times - onto Cummins web site, but either my desktop has a malfunction or its operator does, because I could not get past the front page. Do you have a user profile and log in...........is that the only way to get info ?? Any way, I appreciate you...

When I started in the Offshore game, I worked predominately in Asia, and West Africa............thats where are boats were. Occasionaly we would get part timers come over from the North Sea !! Well as you can imagine, North Sea Tigers ............and we were the South Sea Pussies !! It still exists....

Offshore GOM

In all fairness, I have never worked in the GOM. I have however worked with many companies, whose roots are there. In general I think the guys are pretty good, but do appear limited in their " world wide knowledge "..............but very genuine about it. I think for a guy that has worked ...

Cummins Centenel System

This one was thrown at me the other day. The installation of a system, developed by Cummins Diesel, for reusing the " old oil " from the crankcase. Apparently a small amount of the CC oil is removed by a timed metering pump, placed in a tank, and the oil is made up with clean. The old oil ...

Fuel Economy

OK lets forget the speed thing for a mo. Ulstein (Bergen Diesel) have been including Econometers on their engines / boats for .......25 years at least. I can recall on MK II UT 704's there being great big dials on the Bridge Fwd console, telling the driver when he was running at the most economical ...

Old / Young ?

I think its all to do with brain washing !! For those of us with 30 years under the belt, there is not much we have'nt seen. We tend to be a thorn in the side for Technical Managers. Add to that the return as the Bean Counters look at it. We demand more money, and better conditions. We are high cost...

Foriegn Nationals

Quite honestly I dont see it matters where they come from, regardless of Unions. At the end of the day, If the country concerned cannot find enough " Home Nationals " with the " appropriate qualifications ", then they must come from elsewhere. It happens in every industry. It can...

CoE

Well, fancy that.........lack of certified officers. Perhaps now Transport canada might review their stance on CoE's..........unfortunately it may open the flood gates like it has elsewher. There is a slim chance though, that with the lack of CoE's issued in North America, some lessons may have been...

No takers

Well I thought somebody might have jumped on that one.

I nearly changed my mind and went for a Barlow Flange, but eventually settled for double stud flange, and 2, A60 rubber belows, one either side of the deck.

Lucky I had the space !!

cuni pipe

During the process of installing a sea water cooling system, I have to pass an 8" CuNi pipe through the deck of my boat.

Although I have spent some time doing research on a suitable dielectric sleeve, I have settled for a stainless studflange on either side.

Any better ideas ??

UMS

Chuck, Your up early............not on the 06:00 ~ 12:00 watch are you ?? Quality will always win over quantity. You are so right. I am a firm believer in passing on as much knowledge as I can, and have yet hear of one of my " Juniors " complain if we have to work longer shifts to fix prob...

UMS

Off shift................I wish. I am in Singapore on a 6 month old 70 m PSV, converting it to seismic survey. I will be here for at least 2 more months, perhaps more. She was built as a fully manned ER, with C/E, 2/E and 3/E as the full squad. My previous vessel was 5 years old, full UMS, with the ...
