Dear Gentlemen,
Would like to know what are the advantages and disadvantages if we increase the tappet clearance for the exhaust valve from 0.9 mm to 1.1 mm for a 4-stroke medium speed diesel combustion engine ?
Sincere appreciate yr valuable feedback.

Re: Air inlet temperature for 4-stroke diesel engine
To be more precise, my engine is 2574KW, BORE:330mm, STROKE: 440mm, RPM:620, Compression ratio: 13.5, 6 cylinders ,4-stroke, direct injection using MFO 180cst at 120degC and operating in South East Asia waters with average sea water temperature of 31 degC. Normally the engine room temperature is 40d...

Air inlet temperature for 4-stroke diesel engine
Would appreciate if someone could tell us what is the optimum air inlet temperature to be maintain for a 4-stroke diesel combustion engine ? Usually, what should be the optimum air temperature above the ambient (engine room) temperature before going into the engine cylinders for combustion? Thanks.

Re: ABB Turbochargers - Sealing Air Passages are important!
Actually talking about the centrifuge holes choked / blocked, while the T/C is in operation with normal operating half / full load, you can observe a thin line of oil rising continuously inside the oil sight glass., this means it is normal. If you see a intermittent or broken line of rising oil then...

Re: Lubricating oil system valves
Dear JK, You are right. It sure cost substantial to replace what is being used at present & approved by Class. But then there is still no definitive answer to the usage of gate valves against the globe valves in the marine lub.oil system. What will be the consequences if we do not use the gate v...

Re: Lubricating oil system valves
Dear JK, Thks for yr reply. You are spot on, that the gate valves are meant for full flow. But then the common problems with gate valves are that the gate will drop, stuck, jam or partially open/close due to worn thread & poor material. This system valves had been approved by Class but recently ...

Lubricating oil system valves
Recently, we were asked to change all globe valves to gate valves for the main engine's lubricating oil system . As for the suction valve from sump tank, we were also told to use the non-return flap-type check valve. Presently, our system is using screwdown non-return globe stop valve. Any comments ...

Reefer chamber compressor losing oil
Good day. I would like to have some advice regarding the following problem. Our reefer chamber compressor is gradually losing oil in the crankcase but could not find any leakages. The system is still working fine with freon gas inside. FYI, this system does not have oil separator. Why is it that the...

Re: Crankshaft Deflection
Hi there, Excellent explanation by BP but my question is still unanswered. What is the maximum allowable limit of deflection ? I would also give my 2 cents worth of opinion, whereby nowadays in modern medium & high speed diesel engines, we come across shell-type bearings & not the olden babb...

Crankshaft Deflection
Hi Gentlemen,
Good day.
I would like to know what is the limit allowed or values that indicate a problem for crankshaft bearings after having taken a crankshaft readings?
Pls enlighten me on this if there is any norm to follow.
Appreciate your help, thanks.

Re: VESSEL'S BASE LINE VERIFICATION
Hi, Good day. Okay, let me re-phrase the question. From the base line set-point, we are going to verify the correct draught markings for forward , midship(port & stbdside) & aft draught markings for a newbuilding. Since we are using the flexible hose filled with water (similar to a U-tube co...

High Speed Marine Diesel Engine
Good day! I was wondering why for a high speed marine diesel engine (1500rpm), they do not have individual temperature sensors for each cylinder unit. Usually, they have only one main jacketwater and one main exhaust temperature sensors at main common outlet from all cylinders. Therefore, how are we...

Re: How to explain hydrolock in a diesel engine?
Ok ! This is interesting. Let's ponder & think of the below mentioned scenario. Now there arises the emergency unberthing from an oil terminal & the pilot is already on board. Then you found out that one of the cylinder head cracks & leaking cooling water into the combustion chamber(fill...
