Re: Doom and Gloom

Yes, I have my First Class. I did a Canadian Cadet Program and work as a C/E in Canada. While other Guys slept, drank, played with their kids and watched TV, I was wasting months and months studying Applied Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrotechnology, Naval Architecture, Motor and General knowledge...

Doom and Gloom

It must be exciting times for all those Engineers who couldn't be bothered to study for their First Class License. You just get to walk right into what others have had to invest considerable time and effort to earn. Everyone is a Chief Engineer now, yay. But there's a catch, now everyone has it and ...

Re: STCW10 (Manila Convention) comes into force Jan 1 2017

The dwindling number of First Class Licenses doesn't matter anymore. Any Kid who started a Cadet Program in 2009, and graduated in 2013 (for example) and has 36 months of sea time as 4th, 3rd and or 2nd (you don't have to go through the ranks any more) is entitled to the highest license there is. Th...

Re: STCW10 (Manila Convention) comes into force Jan 1 2017

Has anyone actually read this yet?! Update on how to meet STCW 2010 Manila Convention Requirements for Officers and Ratings of the Engine Department - SSB No.: 05/2017 http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/bu%20...%2005-eng.htm -I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it correctly, but it appears that 1st a...

Re: Marine Atlantic - Leave System

I think its an effort to keep the benefits from the employment created by the ferry service confined to that region.

Re: Marine Atlantic - Leave System

I contacted them, it's 15 days on/off and they don't really pay for travel. Also, they won't let you do a 30 or 45 day rotation.

Marine Atlantic - Leave System

Does anyone know what type of leave system Marine Atlantic offers to Engineers? I hear that its two weeks on/off and they don't pay any travel. If so, that probably explains why they are often looking for people.

Re: CSL Trillium Class - Engine Room Crew

The companies on the Lakes have recently become very hostile towards Engineers. I'm not sure why.

Re: CSL Trillium Class - Engine Room Crew

Running a self unloader with only 3 Engineers and no Electrician. Sounds like an absolute nightmare to me. I wonder how they manage?

What type of leave system do they have?

CSL Trillium Class - Engine Room Crew

Does anyone know how many engine room crew are on the CSL Trillium class vessels? What kind of watches do they stand? What is the leave system? Does the Chief Engineer stand a watch or are they on day work?

Re: Seafarer Shortage

There is absolutely no shortage of Seafarers. Nothing but "doom and gloom" with respect to hiring in all areas of this awful industry. Many people I know are working on reduced contracts this year and that's if they are lucky enough to have a job. I haven't seen a decent shipboard position...

Just study the 55 applied mechanics questions in the binder I sent you and start with that exam.
