Re: Reoccuring 2nd class gen. and motor knowledge questions

JK, there are no "automatic fail" or compulsary questions any more. That went out with the advent of the Canada Shipping Act 2001 on 1 July 2007, when the Marine Personnel Regulations came into effect. Good advice on time management, 30 to read and 30 for each question. The instructions sa...

Re: Reoccuring 2nd class gen. and motor knowledge questions

Jason, look at TP 2293, Examination and Certification of Seafarers, chapter 27.10 http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp-tp2293-chapter27-480.htm#10 27.10 Engineering knowledge of motor vessels (examination code: 2EKM) The duration of the examination is 3½ hours. Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Where did that come from? It's not in any of the SVMO Exams. TP 2293, chapter 33, specifies required knowledge for both written and oral exams. With reference to bilge and ballast systems, the written exam requires knowledge of "Identification and operation of bilge and ballast systems", a...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Fishing port? You eat fish from Lake Erie? *shudders* I won't even eat fish from the Grand Banks because the industrial sewage from the Great Lakes spills out through the Cabot Strait onto there. Did you know a dead beluga whale from the Gulf of St Lawrence pod was washed up on the beach last year? ...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Good news indeed Brian! :) However, I'm unsure about the "additional oral exam". Both unrestricted and restricted Certificates require an Oral exam. The difference is that the Oral for restricted is done aboard the vessel for which the Certificate is issued and is specific to that vessel, ...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

A cofferdam is basically a void space which separates tanks containing different substances. Should one tank leak, it will not contaminate the other. eg fresh water tanks are separated from oil tanks and sewage holding tanks by a cofferdam. Ship construction usually dictates thwartship tanks, so, fo...

Interesting reading here, from the Paris MOU site, Port State Inspections on Canadian ships 2008/09. 21 inspections, very few without deficiencies and/or detention.

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

With regards to the first question, Brian, option 1 is correct. It's a Load Line issue, as the sounding pipe terminates below the waterline, any breach of the tank to the sea will cause uncontrolled ingress of sea water. The weighted cock prevents that by ensuring the end of the pipe is closed. Bilg...

Re: exam questions

It looks like the dates refer to when that Exam question was on a paper in an Exam. The questions do repeat, it takes a long time for every question to recur, but they do, eventually. Other references look like various reference books.

Re: Flag State inspection

"Flag State" and "Port State" inspections are completely different. Flag state is the country whose flag the ship wears, and that administration inspects ships which are registered in that country. Of course, countries "delegate" inspections to Classification societies,...

As a Trustee of HMCS Sackville, Canada's Naval Memorial, I was invited to meet HM when she visited the ship to unviel a plaque after the Fleet Review. We assembled on the South jetty at the Maritime Museum in Halifax and she arrived aboard HMCS St Johns to disembark there when the Review was complet...
